What does a filing manager do?

A Filing Manager oversees the organization, storage, and retrieval of documents within an office or organization. They are responsible for maintaining an efficient filing system, ensuring documents are accurately labeled, stored, and easily accessible. Filing Managers may supervise a team of clerks, implement document management systems, and ensure compliance with data security and retention policies. Their work is essential for keeping records orderly and supporting the smooth operation of office functions.

What are some common challenges faced by a filing manager, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Filing Managers often encounter challenges such as maintaining accuracy in large volumes of documents, ensuring proper classification, and keeping up with both physical and digital filing systems. Staying organized and implementing clear, consistent filing protocols can help address these issues. Utilizing document management software and regularly training team members on best practices are effective strategies to prevent misfiling and maintain compliance with data retention policies. Open communication with other departments also helps Filing Managers anticipate and manage surges in document flow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a filing manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Filing Manager, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience with records management, often supported by a background in office administration. Familiarity with document management systems (DMS), digital archiving tools, and occasionally certifications like Certified Records Manager (CRM) are typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and problem-solving abilities help you efficiently oversee filing systems and coordinate with staff. These skills are crucial for maintaining accurate records, ensuring compliance, and supporting smooth operations within an organization.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and develop engineering leadership by hiring, mentoring, and advancing engineering teams.

  • Define and own a strategic technical vision and roadmap for a critical area of EFS architecture.

  • Drive architectural excellence through distributed systems design, risk identification, and solution championing.

Job description

Lead the technical vision and strategy for one of AWS's most critical storage services, managing multiple engineering teams building the world's most scalable, elastic, and fully managed cloud file storage. Your decisions will directly impact millions of active file systems, exabytes of stored data, and customers ranging from startups to the world's largest enterprises.

Key job responsibilities
  • Build and develop engineering leadership: Hire, mentor, and advance engineering leaders and senior engineers, creating an inclusive environment where technical talent can grow and contribute meaningfully to strategic initiatives.
  • Define strategic technical vision: Own a strategically important area of EFS architectureโ€”such as the data plane, metadata service, or replication systemsโ€”and establish a 3โ€“5 year technical roadmap that addresses the needs of large, critical customer bases.
  • Drive architectural excellence: Contribute to distributed systems design discussions, identify systemic risks and opportunities across the storage stack, and champion solutions that improve security, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
  • Influence across organizational boundaries: Partner with teams across S3, EBS, FSx, and the broader AWS ecosystem to reach consensus on technical direction, influence peer roadmaps, and deliver cohesive solutions that advance cloud storage capabilities.
  • Establish operational excellence: Create mechanisms to inspect service quality, customer experience, and operational health, while fostering a culture of innovation that encourages simplification and continuous improvement.
A day in the life

You'll spend your time balancing strategic leadership with hands-on technical engagement. Your day might include architecting solutions for distributed file system challenges, mentoring engineering leaders on complex technical decisions, and collaborating with peer teams across AWS Storage to advance cloud infrastructure capabilities. You'll participate in design reviews for critical components like metadata management and storage tiering, then shift to performance calibration conversations with your team leads. You'll also dedicate time to understanding customer needs and translating them into roadmap priorities, ensuring your teams are building solutions that matter at scale.

About the team

We are a team of engineers and technical leaders committed to building foundational cloud storage infrastructure that powers some of the world's most demanding workloads. Our vision is to make elastic file storage seamlessly scalable, reliable, and accessible to organizations of all sizes. You'll work alongside Principal Engineers, Product Managers, and peer teams across AWS Storage, collaborating to advance the state of cloud infrastructure. We serve customers ranging from startups experimenting with containerized workloads to enterprises managing petabytes of data, and your leadership will help shape how we evolve to meet their changing needs. We're excited to welcome someone who can help us build the next generation of engineering leaders while maintaining the operational excellence our customers depend on.

  • Experience partnering with product and program management teams
  • Experience designing and developing large scale, high-traffic applications
  • Knowledge of filesystem internals and POSIX a plus.
