Filemaker Development information

What is FileMaker development?

FileMaker development involves designing, building, and maintaining custom database solutions using the FileMaker platform, which is now known as Claris FileMaker. FileMaker developers create applications that help organizations manage data, automate workflows, and improve business efficiency. These solutions can be deployed on desktops, mobile devices, and the web, and often integrate with other systems and data sources. FileMaker development requires knowledge of scripting, relational databases, and user interface design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FileMaker developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FileMaker Developer, you need strong skills in database design, scripting, and problem-solving, typically backed by experience with FileMaker Pro and a relevant technical background. Familiarity with FileMaker Server, integrations via APIs, and certifications like FileMaker Certified Developer are valuable. Attention to detail, effective communication, and adaptability help in understanding client requirements and delivering user-friendly solutions. These competencies are crucial for building robust, scalable, and efficient custom database applications that meet organizational needs.

What are some common challenges faced by FileMaker developers when working on projects with cross-functional teams?

FileMaker Developers often encounter challenges related to integrating FileMaker solutions with other software platforms used by cross-functional teams, such as ERP or CRM systems. Ensuring seamless data exchange, aligning project timelines, and communicating technical requirements to non-technical stakeholders can require extra coordination. Additionally, adapting to varying workflows and maintaining data integrity across different departments are key aspects of the role. Successful FileMaker Developers are proactive in fostering clear communication and documenting integration processes to help teams collaborate efficiently.

What is the difference between Filemaker Development vs Filemaker Administration?

Job description

At Apple, great ideas have a way of becoming great products, services, and customer experiences very quickly. Claris International Inc., an Apple company, is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of database engineers in designing, delivering, and operating robust data platforms for client-facing solutions. In this role, you will combine deep database architecture expertise with hands-on delivery rigor, ensuring projects are executed on time, to specification, and with production-grade quality. You will translate client requirements into scalable, secure technical designs while fostering a culture of accountability and execution excellence.

Description

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead the architecture and delivery of mission-critical server and FileMaker platform technologies that power enterprise-scale solutions and directly impact customer success. You will partner closely with Pro, Cloud, Infrastructure, and cross-functional engineering teams to translate complex business and platform requirements into scalable, resilient, and high-performance data architectures.

You will own the end-to-end technical lifecycle of FileMaker Server, including schema design, data modeling, replication strategies, backup and recovery architecture, observability, security, and performance optimization. Your leadership will ensure that platform capabilities are engineered for scalability, high availability, operational excellence, and long-term maintainability across distributed server environments.

In this role, you will drive technical direction for core platform engineering features, enabling reliable data services, secure multi-user operations, and enterprise-grade resilience for FileMaker core technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of engineers to design, deliver, and operate robust data platforms tailored to specific client use cases.

  • Architect solutions across FileMaker Server, Client, WebDirect, application programming interfaces (APIs), and cloud or on-premises deployments.

  • Review designs and code to ensure correctness, manage edge cases, and promote long-term operability.

  • Manage dependencies, risks, and tradeoffs proactively to meet committed deadlines and delivery dates.

  • Drive performance tuning, monitoring, and proactive optimization for production environments, ensuring high availability and data durability.

  • Enforce security best practices, compliance requirements, and disaster recovery standards.

  • Coach engineers to think from a client impact perspective, fostering a culture of execution excellence and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing technical engineering teams.

  • Experience with the FileMaker platform, including Server, Pro, WebDirect, and Data API.

  • Knowledge of modern cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and hybrid deployment models, as well as C++.

  • Experience with enterprise-scale database performance tuning, security frameworks, and compliance standards (such as SOC 2, GDPR, or HIPAA).

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with competing priorities and navigate stakeholder relationships.

  • Experience implementing monitoring, alerting, and observability solutions for production databases.

  • Ability to coach and develop team members, fostering an inclusive environment that encourages diverse perspectives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in hands on database or data engineering roles.

  • 2+ years of experience leading technical teams delivering client-facing systems or production database solutions.

  • Experience designing scalable architectures across Server, Client, WebDirect, APIs, and cloud or on-premises deployments.

  • Experience delivering complex systems on schedule while maintaining quality standards.

  • Experience with data modeling, schema design, and normalization principles.

  • Experience communicating technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
