What is a Figure Eight job?

A Figure Eight job typically refers to microtasks or small online jobs that were available on the Figure Eight platform (formerly CrowdFlower). These tasks included data labeling, transcription, content moderation, and other AI training activities. The platform connected businesses needing small tasks completed with remote workers. In 2019, Figure Eight was acquired by Appen, and its services were integrated into Appen’s ecosystem. Workers now find similar opportunities through Appen’s platform.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Figure Eight position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Figure Eight data annotation specialist, you need strong attention to detail, proficiency in data labeling or categorization tasks, and basic computer literacy. Experience with the Figure Eight (Appen) platform or similar data annotation tools is advantageous, along with any training in data quality assurance or related certifications. Excellent time management, consistent accuracy, and the ability to follow complex guidelines make candidates stand out. These competencies ensure high-quality data output, critical for powering machine learning and AI projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Figure Eight data annotation specialists, and how can they be managed?

Figure Eight data annotation specialists often encounter repetitive tasks and must maintain consistent quality across large datasets, which can be mentally demanding. Managing fatigue and staying focused are essential for minimizing errors, so taking regular breaks and setting workload goals can help enhance productivity. Clear communication with project managers and peers is also key, especially when task guidelines are updated or clarified. Many professionals find that developing personal strategies for organization and regularly revisiting quality standards helps them excel in this role.

Job description

Figure is an AI robotics company developing autonomous general-purpose humanoid robots. The goal of the company is to ship humanoid robots with human level intelligence. Its robots are engineered to perform a variety of tasks in the home and commercial markets. Figure is headquartered in San Jose, CA.

We're hiring Helix Data Creators to power our humanoid robot development. In this hands-on role, you'll wear Figure-provided sensor equipment to guide robots through human-like motions and collect the high-quality motion data that trains our AI models.

This is a full-time 6 month fixed-term position, paid hourly. It's a strong entry point into robotics: high-performing Creators have opportunities to grow into Senior Creator and other lead positions as they become available.

Schedule: Night Shift - 10:30 pm - 7 am

This is a 24/7 operation staffed across multiple rotating shifts (Day, Swing, and Night). Night-shift hours are eligible for a $3/hr differential ($33/hr). Some flexibility for rotation may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Data collection: Wear sensor suits to perform repetitive, precise physical movements (walking, lifting, reaching) that guide the robot and generate training data, for up to 8 hours per shift.
  • SOP adherence: Follow detailed "Ground Truth" movement protocols exactly, with zero deviation, to keep data consistent and high quality.
  • Equipment care: Help with donning and doffing sensor suits, follow proper setup and shutdown procedures, and promptly report any hardware issues to your Inventory Team Lead.
  • Feedback & quality: Flag bugs or issues during collection, share daily feedback to improve the process, and work comfortably toward daily data-collection targets.
  • Safety: Keep a clean, organized workspace and follow ergonomic guidelines to stay safe during repetitive tasks. We want you to speak up early about anything that doesn't feel right.

Requirements:

  • Able to perform repetitive standing, walking, lifting, reaching, and full-range limb motions required for motion-capture across an 8+ hour shift
  • Excellent physical coordination, spatial awareness, and sustained focus
  • Quick to master new physical tasks and find the most efficient way to perform them
  • Open to constructive feedback and motivated to keep improving
  • Strong attendance and punctuality; reliable, accountable, and able to work both independently and within a small team
  • Reliable transportation, and able to travel to different work sites around the Bay Area (locations change regularly)
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment with shifting priorities
  • Legally authorized to work in the US

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Technical or hands-on background (electronics, mechanical, IT, fabrication, etc.)
  • Hardware/software troubleshooting experience
  • VR headset experience and/or extensive video-game experience (great proxies for spatial tracking and hand-eye coordination)
  • Prior robotics or motion-capture exposure
  • Military background
  • A genuine passion for robotics and helping scale the deployment of humanoid robots

This role begins as a 6 month fixed-term agreement, with potential for longer-term opportunities depending on your contributions and interests. We're looking for motivated people who want to support real-world robot development and grow with us.

The US base salary range for this full-time position starts at $30/hr.

The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role. This information will be shared if an employment offer is extended.
