What is a FIFO?

A FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) job is a type of work arrangement where employees travel to remote locations for a set period before returning home for scheduled time off. It is commonly used in industries like mining, oil and gas, and construction, where worksites are in isolated areas. Employers typically provide transportation, accommodation, and meals for workers during their shifts. FIFO schedules vary but often involve working for weeks at a time followed by a block of days off. This setup allows workers to maintain a home base while working in remote locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the FIFO position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) worker, you need relevant trade or professional qualifications for your industry (such as mining, construction, or engineering), physical fitness, and the ability to adapt to remote environments. Familiarity with industry-specific machinery, safety certifications like White Card or MSHA, and experience using scheduling or reporting software are often required. Strong teamwork, resilience, and communication skills are vital for maintaining productivity and morale during extended periods away from home. These qualities enable FIFO workers to operate safely and efficiently while adapting to unique workplace and lifestyle demands.

What is the typical work schedule and rotation like for FIFO roles?

FIFO positions usually operate on a roster system, such as two weeks working on-site followed by one week off, but this can vary depending on the employer and project needs. While on rotation, workers are provided with accommodation, meals, and necessary amenities at or near the work site, often in remote areas. The schedule may include long shifts, often 10–12 hours per day, with occasional night shifts. This structure requires adaptability and good work-life planning, but it also allows for extended time off to rest and spend with family between rosters.
