Job Inventory information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Inventory Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Inventory Manager, you need a solid grasp of inventory control, supply chain management, and data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree or experience in logistics or business administration. Familiarity with inventory management software (such as SAP, Oracle, or NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills are typically required. Strong attention to detail, organizational abilities, and effective communication help you stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for maintaining accurate stock levels, minimizing costs, and ensuring efficient operations within a business.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in job inventory management, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in job inventory management often encounter challenges such as balancing stock levels to prevent overstocking or stockouts, managing data accuracy, and coordinating effectively with other departments like purchasing and sales. Addressing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, proficiency with inventory management software, and clear communication with team members. Adopting best practices—such as regular cycle counts, real-time tracking, and ongoing process improvement—can help mitigate these issues and ensure efficient operations.

What are Job Inventory positions?

Job Inventory positions refer to a pool of pre-screened job openings within an organization or agency, often used to fill roles quickly as they become available. Applicants are assessed and placed in an inventory, which hiring managers can draw from when a suitable vacancy arises. This process helps speed up hiring and ensures that qualified candidates are readily accessible. Typically, candidates remain in the job inventory for a set period and may be contacted for interviews as positions match their skills.

Pay: From $25.00 per hour

Company: PackYak Fulfillment
Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Type: Full-time
Reports to: Warehouse Manager

About the Role

PackYak Fulfillment is hiring an Inventory Controller to own inventory accuracy and placement across the warehouse through restocking, cycle counting, variance reconciliation, location control, root-cause analysis, and corrective action. This role is responsible for ensuring that inventory records are accurate, warehouse locations are clean and compliant, and inventory issues are identified and resolved before they impact fulfillment, receiving, shipping, or client reporting.

The Inventory Controller plays a critical role in maintaining trust in the WMS/ERP, reducing shrink, preventing fulfillment errors, and supporting efficient warehouse operations. This position requires strong attention to detail, investigative problem-solving, clear communication, and the ability to enforce inventory standards across teams. This position requires availability to work two or more Saturday shifts per month.

Key Responsibilities

Inventory Accuracy & Cycle Counts

  • Own day-to-day inventory accuracy and stock replenishment through restock, cycle counts, directed counts, recounts, and exception-based audits.
  • Execute and manage scheduled cycle count programs to ensure counts are completed accurately and on time.
  • Investigate inventory discrepancies including shorts, overages, mis-picks, location errors, receiving errors, damaged goods, and adjustment issues.
  • Perform root-cause analysis on recurring inventory problems and recommend corrective actions.
  • Partner with warehouse leads, receiving, picking, packing, shipping, and client success teams to resolve inventory issues quickly.
  • Help maintain high inventory accuracy across all SKUs, bins, storage zones, and client accounts.

WMS/ERP Reconciliation & Recordkeeping

  • Reconcile WMS/ERP variances related to receipts, picks, transfers, adjustments, returns, damages, and inventory movements.
  • Ensure all inventory adjustments are properly documented, approved, and traceable.
  • Maintain audit-ready inventory records with clear notes, supporting documentation, photos, and transaction history when needed.
  • Review inventory transactions for accuracy and identify patterns that may indicate process breakdowns or user errors.
  • Support month-end, client-requested, and operational inventory audits as needed.
  • Work with leadership to ensure inventory records accurately reflect physical inventory in the warehouse.

Bin, Location & Slotting Integrity

  • Manage bin and location integrity throughout the warehouse.
  • Monitor and correct empty-bin errors, mixed-SKU locations, unscanned moves, mislabeled bins, and location mismatches.
  • Ensure inventory is stored in the correct locations according to slotting rules, client requirements, velocity, and operational needs.
  • Identify and clean up problem areas including overflow, quarantine, damages, returns, and staging locations.
  • Support location audits, barcode verification, relabeling, and bin cleanup projects.
Help improve slotting compliance to reduce picking errors, wasted movement, and inventory confusion.

Inventory Health & Disposition Management

  • Monitor inventory health including aging inventory, expiration dates, damages, shorts, overages, unsellable product, and slow-moving stock.
  • Identify inventory that requires disposition, escalation, quarantine, relabeling, repackaging, return-to-vendor, disposal, or client review.
  • Partner with operations and client-facing teams to drive timely decisions on damaged, expired, or problematic inventory.
  • Maintain clear visibility into inventory that is blocked, on hold, expired, damaged, or otherwise unavailable for sale.
  • Help reduce obsolete inventory, prevent fulfillment of damaged or expired goods, and ensure inventory status is accurately reflected in the system.

SOPs, Training & Process Compliance

  • Publish, enforce, and review inventory-related SOPs for accuracy, shrink prevention, damages, cycle count completion, bin integrity, adjustments, and inventory movement.
  • Train warehouse team members on inventory best practices, proper scanning, location discipline, damage handling, and discrepancy escalation.
  • Audit team compliance with inventory procedures and provide feedback or retraining when needed.
  • Help standardize processes across receiving, putaway, picking, packing, returns, and shipping to improve inventory accuracy.
  • Identify gaps in existing SOPs and recommend improvements to reduce errors and improve accountability.
  • Support a culture of accuracy, ownership, and process discipline across warehouse operations.

Exception Resolution & Root-Cause Analysis

  • Investigate and resolve inventory exceptions that impact order fulfillment, receiving, shipping, returns, or client reporting.
  • Research transaction history, physical movement, system activity, and team workflows to determine the cause of discrepancies.
  • Escalate unresolved or high-impact issues to warehouse leadership with clear findings and recommended next steps.
  • Document recurring errors and help implement corrective actions to prevent repeat issues.
  • Partner with managers and leads to improve processes related to shrink, damages, mis-picks, adjustments, and location errors.

Cross-Functional Warehouse Support

  • Work closely with Receiving, Outbound, Shipping, Returns, Client Success, and Operations leadership to keep inventory accurate and available.
  • Assist with audits, transfers, inventory moves, relabeling, kitting, rework, and special projects as needed.
  • Support client-specific inventory requests, investigations, and reporting.
  • Help ensure inventory-related blockers are resolved quickly so customer orders can ship accurately and on time.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and clearly labeled inventory control work areas.

Safety, Cleanliness & General Standards

  • Follow all warehouse safety procedures, PPE requirements, and equipment guidelines.
  • Maintain clean and organized inventory areas, count zones, quarantine areas, and damage locations.
  • Ensure inventory is handled, moved, labeled, and stored safely.
  • Promote consistent warehouse standards for accuracy, cleanliness, and accountability.
  • Assist with general warehouse tasks as needed to support daily operations.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of experience in inventory control, warehouse operations, fulfillment, logistics, receiving, or a related role.
  • Strong understanding of inventory accuracy, cycle counting, SKU management, bin locations, and warehouse movement.
  • Forklift or pallet jack experience/certification
  • Experience researching and resolving inventory discrepancies.
  • Comfortable working with WMS/ERP systems, scanners, spreadsheets, inventory reports, and transaction history.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify patterns, errors, and root causes.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with team members, leads, managers, and cross-functional departments.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand/walk for long periods, and work in a fast-paced warehouse environment.
  • Reliable attendance, strong ownership, and a high level of accountability.

Preferred

  • Experience with WMS platforms, ERP systems, inventory reporting tools, or ecommerce fulfillment systems.
  • Experience with cycle count programs, inventory audits, shrink reduction, damage control, or slotting compliance.
  • Familiarity with lot tracking, serial tracking, expiration-date tracking, quarantine processes, and inventory disposition.
  • Experience creating or enforcing SOPs in a warehouse or fulfillment environment.
  • Intermediate spreadsheet skills, including filtering, sorting, basic formulas, and reconciliation work.
  • Previous experience as an Inventory Control Specialist, Inventory Coordinator, Warehouse Lead, Receiving Specialist, or Operations Coordinator.

What Success Looks Like

  • Inventory records accurately match physical inventory across locations, SKUs, and client accounts.
  • Cycle counts are completed on schedule with clear documentation and timely follow-up.
  • Inventory discrepancies are investigated thoroughly and resolved quickly.
  • Root causes are identified and corrective actions reduce repeat errors.
  • WMS/ERP adjustments are accurate, documented, and audit-ready.
  • Bin locations are clean, organized, properly labeled, and compliant with slotting standards.
  • Aging, expired, damaged, and problematic inventory is monitored and dispositioned promptly.
