What is a FIFO worker?

FIFO workers, or Fly-In Fly-Out workers, are employees who travel to remote work sites—often in the mining, oil, gas, or construction industries—for a set period before returning home for time off. This arrangement allows companies to staff projects in locations where it may not be practical for workers to live permanently. FIFO workers typically work long shifts for several weeks at a time, followed by a period of leave. The role can be physically and mentally demanding, but it offers attractive pay and the chance to work on significant infrastructure projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FIFO worker?

To thrive as a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) Worker, you generally need relevant trade or industry qualifications, physical fitness, and experience working in remote or industrial environments. Familiarity with safety protocols, site-specific equipment, and often certifications like White Card or relevant tickets (e.g., forklift, machinery operation) are typically required. Strong communication, resilience, and the ability to adapt to isolation and rotational shifts are essential soft skills. These capabilities ensure safe, efficient performance and help workers manage the unique challenges of remote work schedules.

What are some common challenges FIFO workers face regarding work-life balance, and how can they be managed?

FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) workers often experience challenges maintaining work-life balance due to extended periods away from home and family. The rostered schedule can lead to feelings of isolation or difficulty participating in social events. To manage these challenges, many employers provide mental health support, regular communication channels with loved ones, and access to recreational facilities on-site. Building a strong support network both at work and at home is key to adapting successfully to FIFO life.

What is the difference between Fifo Worker vs Warehouse Associate?

AspectFifo WorkerWarehouse Associate
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma, basic safety trainingHigh school diploma, safety training
Work EnvironmentFood storage, cold storage, retail warehousesGeneral warehouse, distribution centers
Industry UsageFood industry, perishable goodsVarious industries including retail and manufacturing
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Fifo Workers primarily handle perishable goods in food storage environments, focusing on inventory rotation to prevent spoilage. Warehouse Associates work across various industries, managing general warehouse tasks. While both roles require safety training and a high school diploma, Fifo Workers specialize in FIFO (First-In, First-Out) procedures specific to perishable items, whereas Warehouse Associates have broader responsibilities in different warehouse settings.

How do you become a FIFO worker?

To become a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) worker, candidates typically need relevant industry experience, such as in mining, construction, or oil and gas, along with necessary certifications like safety or site-specific training. Employers often require physical fitness, the ability to work in remote locations, and flexibility for rotating shifts. Applying through job boards, recruitment agencies, or company websites is common for securing FIFO roles.

"We move the world's workforce - building the technology that gets thousands of FIFO workers home safely, on time, every day"

The Role

We move the world's workforce, building the technology that gets thousands of FIFO workers home safely, on time, every day. This role sits at the heart of that mission. The Principal Product Owner, Workforce Travel Solutions is a senior, hands-on delivery role with direct accountability for shaping and shipping the products that power workforce travel for customers in the mining, oil, and gas sectors. You will own the backlog, lead discovery, and drive execution for our One Touch initiative and a connected platform that automates the full travel chain from roster to return. This is not a strategy-only role. You will be in the detail: writing stories, running workshops with enterprise customers, making scope calls, and ensuring the squad ships outcomes that matter. You will also operate with more autonomy and customer exposure than a standard Product Owner, and you will play a meaningful role in shaping product direction alongside the Head of Product Development.

What You'll Do

Customer & Discovery

Act as the senior product representative for workforce travel, engaging directly with customers in mining, oil, and gas to understand complex operational requirements
Lead discovery conversations, workshops, and problem-definition sessions and translating ambiguous or incomplete customer needs into clear problem statements and value hypotheses
Represent customer context, constraints, and priorities clearly within delivery and stakeholder forums
Partner with the Head of Product Development to feed high-quality discovery insights into roadmap planning, including options, trade-offs, and delivery implications

Delivery & Backlog

Own and maintain a clear, prioritised product backlog for workforce travel initiatives, ensuring readiness to support predictable, high-quality delivery
Break down complex initiatives into well-defined, testable user stories with unambiguous acceptance criteria
Lead day-to-day delivery for assigned initiatives, making informed scope, sequencing, and trade-off decisions while protecting value and quality
Actively lead agile ceremonies: planning, refinement, reviews, and retrospectives
Identify and resolve delivery blockers; escalate risks and strategic decisions when required
Define and track success measures for delivered initiatives; use data, customer feedback, and operational insights to validate outcomes and adjust course

Stakeholders & Practice

Build trusted relationships with stakeholders across technology, operations, and commercial teams; communicating delivery progress, risks, and trade-offs proactively

Set a high standard for product ownership, story quality, and delivery discipline across the team

Mentor and support other Product Owners where appropriate

Contribute to continuous improvement of product ways of working, templates, and practices

What Success Looks Like

Delivery outcomes: Initiatives land to agreed scope, quality, and timelines. The squad maintains a sustainable, predictable cadence

Customer value: Delivered solutions address real workforce travel problems. Customers feel heard and well-served

Backlog quality: Stories are clear, testable, and consistently ready ahead of sprint. Refinement is never a bottleneck

Stakeholder confidence: Internal and external stakeholders trust your clarity, judgement, and follow-through

Insight contribution: Your discovery work generates inputs that meaningfully improve roadmap and prioritisation decisions

Practice uplift: The product practice is stronger because of your presence standards rise, not just output

About You

Essential
Proven experience as a Product Owner or Principal Product Owner in agile, cross-functional delivery teams building complex B2B or operational products
Demonstrated ability to engage directly and confidently with enterprise customers and running workshops, leading discovery, and managing expectations in complex environments
Strong track record translating ambiguous, incomplete, or conflicting requirements into clear, executable user stories with well-defined acceptance criteria
Sound delivery judgement and able to make scope, sequencing, and trade-off decisions without requiring escalation for every call
Experience working alongside engineering and design teams in fast-moving delivery environments, balancing customer needs with technical and commercial constraints

Highly Regarded
Experience in travel management, workforce logistics, or industries with complex scheduling and compliance requirements (mining, oil and gas, resources, aviation)
Exposure to enterprise customers with large-scale workforce operations and understanding the operational stakes of getting workforce travel wrong
Familiarity with API-driven product development and integrations between workforce management and travel booking platforms
Experience working within a technology business that sells to other businesses, with an understanding of how product decisions affect commercial relationships
