Job description

SALARY:

Starting at $18.79 per hour

SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Sports Official Youth is responsible for officiating and supervising youth sports leagues for children. This position ensures games are conducted in a safe, fair, and positive environment while promoting sportsmanship and youth development. Sports may include basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, kickball, baseball/softball, and additional sports as needed. Officials are expected to demonstrate professionalism, enforce rules, and communicate effectively with players, coaches, and parents.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Officiate youth sports games and enforce league rules and safety guidelines.
  • Monitor players conduct and maintain a positive, sportsmanlike environment.
  • Conduct pre-game safety checks of fields and equipment.
  • Communicate with coaches, parents, volunteers, and participants in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Respond to minor injuries or incidents.
  • Complete incident reports and submit documentation as required.
  • Cancel or delay games due to unsafe conditions when necessary.
  • Arrive on time in proper uniform with necessary officiating equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of youth sports rules and officiating standards (e.g., basketball, soccer, flag football, volleyball).
  • Knowledge of child safety practices and basic first aid procedures.
  • Knowledge of department policies and youth development principles.
  • Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
  • Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
  • Skill with organization and attention to detail.
  • Skill in officiating and managing youth sports games.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with children, parents, and coaches.
  • Skill in conflict resolution and maintaining a positive game environment.
  • Skill in time management and multitasking during active events.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce rules fairly and consistently.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure or emotional situations.
  • Ability to work independently and make quick decisions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and report incidents clearly.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED
