What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HVAC Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HVAC Technician, you need a solid understanding of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, often supported by technical training or certification such as EPA Section 608. Familiarity with diagnostic tools (like those made by Fieldpiece), multimeters, and HVAC control systems is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong customer service skills help technicians excel in varied work environments. These skills ensure accurate diagnostics, efficient repairs, and satisfied clients, which are essential for success in this role.

What are some common challenges faced by HVAC technicians working with Fieldpiece tools in the field?

HVAC technicians using Fieldpiece tools often encounter challenges such as adapting to new technology, ensuring accurate diagnostics, and managing equipment calibration. Field conditions can vary greatly, so technicians must be comfortable troubleshooting in diverse environments and sometimes under tight time constraints. Additionally, keeping up with the latest product updates and best practices for tool maintenance is essential for delivering efficient and reliable service.

Fieldpiece refers to a brand of testing tools used by HVAC professionals, including HVAC technicians. An HVAC Technician is a skilled worker who installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. While Fieldpiece tools are essential for HVAC technicians, the roles are distinct: one is a brand of equipment, the other is a job title. Understanding this difference helps clarify job requirements and tool usage in the HVAC industry.

What is a Fieldpiece and what does someone in this role do?

Fieldpiece is not a job title, but rather a brand known for producing professional tools and equipment for HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) technicians. Fieldpiece tools help technicians diagnose, repair, and maintain HVACR systems efficiently. People working with Fieldpiece products are typically HVACR technicians who use these specialized instruments—such as multimeters, refrigerant scales, and leak detectors—to ensure systems are running safely and efficiently.

Job description

Shape the Future of Connected HVACR Technology

At Fieldpiece, we build tools that HVACR professionals trust. As we continue expanding our connected ecosystem of instruments, software, and cloud-enabled solutions, we're looking for a Senior Product Manager to help define what's next.

This is a highly strategic role for someone who loves spending time with customers, uncovering unmet needs, and translating insights into innovative products and services. You'll work across hardware, firmware, software, data, and commercial teams to identify opportunities, shape product strategy, and bring solutions to market that make technicians more productive and successful.

Recognized as one of Southern California’s Best Places to Work (2023, 2024, 2025 & 2026), we provide a Hire-to-Retire philosophy, hybrid schedule, and a culture of curiosity – a place where you’ll have the support to innovate boldly, grow continuously, and make a tangible impact on an industry that powers everyday life.

What You'll Do

Be the Voice of the Customer

  • Spend time in the field with technicians, distributors, contractors, and industry partners to understand workflows, challenges, and emerging needs.
  • Lead Voice of Customer (VOC) initiatives through interviews, field observation, surveys, and market research.
  • Apply customer discovery methodologies including Jobs-to-Be-Done, ethnographic research, and hypothesis-driven experimentation.
  • Translate customer insights into product opportunities, business cases, and strategic recommendations.

Drive Product & Portfolio Strategy

  • Define and influence product strategy across Fieldpiece's portfolio of hardware, firmware, mobile applications, cloud-connected solutions, and digital services.
  • Identify new growth opportunities through customer insights, market trends, competitive intelligence, and emerging technologies.
  • Develop business cases, market assessments, TAM/SAM/SOM analyses, pricing strategies, and investment recommendations.
  • Prioritize product opportunities that balance short-term commercial impact with long-term platform and ecosystem growth.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to evaluate strategic opportunities and product investments.

Shape the Future of Connected Solutions

  • Partner closely with engineering, software, data, and product development teams to define future product requirements and roadmap priorities.
  • Leverage product usage data, connected-device insights, and customer feedback to guide innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Help define how Fieldpiece's instruments, mobile applications, cloud services, and analytics platforms work together to create a seamless customer experience.
  • Identify opportunities to expand Fieldpiece's software, connectivity, and digital ecosystem capabilities.

Lead Commercialization & Go-to-Market Success

  • Develop go-to-market strategies for new product launches and portfolio expansions.
  • Define positioning, messaging, value propositions, and customer segmentation strategies.
  • Partner with sales, marketing, training, and channel teams to ensure successful product launches and adoption.
  • Measure launch success and market performance, using insights to improve future product decisions

What Success Looks Like

Within your first year, you will:

  • Build strong relationships with technicians, distributors, and key industry stakeholders.
  • Identify high-impact customer problems and translate them into product opportunities.
  • Influence the roadmap for future hardware and software solutions.
  • Help launch innovative products and connected experiences that strengthen Fieldpiece's market leadership.
  • Establish a strong VOC-driven process that informs strategic product decisions across the organization.
  • 8+ years of product management, upstream marketing, product strategy, or related experience.
  • Proven experience bringing technical products from concept through commercialization.
  • Strong background in connected products, IoT, software platforms, SaaS, cloud-enabled solutions, or digital ecosystems.
  • Experience working closely with engineering and software development teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather customer insights and translate them into successful products and business outcomes.
  • Strong business acumen with experience developing business cases, pricing strategies, and market analyses.
  • Exceptional communication, storytelling, and stakeholder influence skills.
  • Experience working in industries involving physical products, connected devices, industrial equipment, tools, instrumentation, or technology solutions is highly desirable.
  • Passion for innovation and solving real customer problems.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% is needed to meet customers, distributors, and attend events.

Why Fieldpiece?

Fieldpiece has spent decades earning the trust of HVACR professionals through innovation, reliability, and customer focus. As we continue expanding our connected ecosystem, you'll have the opportunity to directly influence the products, software, and experiences that thousands of technicians rely on every day.

We believe great work deserves great rewards.

  • Matching 401k up to 4% with immediate vesting.
  • Excellent medical benefits including an HSA option with monthly contributions.
  • Supplemental Term Life, Employee Assistance Programs (EAD), Disability, and more.
  • Hire to Retire philosophy that includes personal career development plans.
  • Onsite music program with lessons from guitar, piano and voice coaches.
  • And more!
