What is a field service technician?

Field Service Technicians are skilled professionals who install, maintain, and repair equipment or systems at client locations rather than in a fixed workplace. They often work in industries such as manufacturing, IT, telecommunications, or medical devices, providing on-site technical support and troubleshooting. Their job involves traveling to customer sites, diagnosing issues, performing repairs, and ensuring equipment is functioning properly. Strong problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and customer service abilities are essential for this role.

What does a field service technician do?

As a field service technician, your responsibilities and duties include traveling to work sites to conduct maintenance and repairs to computers for individuals and businesses. You must troubleshoot problems that your clients are having with technology, including software and hardware issues. You travel, usually by car, to the home or business of the client so that you can remedy the situation on site. Your job is to listen to the client’s concerns, diagnose the problem, and provide a suitable solution.

They must also balance technical problem-solving with strong customer service skills, as they represent the company during on-site visits. Additionally, they may need to quickly learn new technologies or procedures to address unique client needs, making adaptability and ongoing learning essential for success in this role.
