Job description

Overview

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Fiber Installation Technician is responsible for installing, modifying, repairing, and disconnecting cable services, including video, data, and telephone. This role performs hands on field work involving the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic and coaxial cable systems and related equipment. In certain service areas, the technician will support dual platform environments requiring knowledge and use of both coaxial and fiber technologies. All work must be performed in accordance with established safety policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Install, splice, and terminate fiber-optic cables and connectors in both indoor and outdoor settings. Ensure proper routing and organization of cables to meet industry standards.
  • Conduct thorough testing and quality assurance checks to verify the functionality and performance of the installed fiber optic connections. Identify and resolve issues as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair activities on fiber-optic equipment and network infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted service. Respond to service outages promptly and restore connectivity.
  • Maintain detailed records of installations, repairs, and equipment used. Generate accurate reports on work completed and document network configurations.
  • Interact with customers in a professional and customer-focused manner. Address their inquiries, explain service options, and provide technical support when required.
  • Maintain safe work environment by following safe practices and adhering to safety policies. Report any accidents, losses, injuries or property damage to supervisor and customer based on established policies
  • Collaborate with colleagues and other teams to resolve complex technical issues and coordinate on network expansion projects.
  • Accurately manage inventory, ensuring correct device counts and records
  • Update and improve job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical publications, and up-training.
  • Enhance the organization’s reputation through personal accountability for accomplishing new and different requests and always striving to add value.
  • Apply personal ethics, honesty, initiative, flexibility and responsibility in the performance of work assignments.
  • Accurately report all time worked and notify management or human resources of any questions, issues or concerns in this regard.
  • Ensure that the highest quality of service is provided to promote superior customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain punctual, regular and consistent attendance.
  • Self-monitor performance through scorecard reports.

  • Read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approximately 32ft high and 90 pounds)

  • Ability to make cable connections in tight spaces by bending, reaching and twisting
  • Ability to perform job from high places (i.e. poles and roofs)

  • Ability to work with small components and wires to make cable connections
  • Ability to use handheld communication devices and applications
  • Ability to travel (including during inclement weather) to and from assigned territories and company facilities
  • Ability to work outside for extended periods in any season and/or during inclement weather
  • Familiarity with computer operating systems, and a myriad of consumer and commercial communications devices (e.g., PDAs, smartphones, routers, modems, converters and wireless devices), and computer software applications
  • Ability to complete documentation accurately
  • Moderate understanding of IP networks
  • Basic understanding of Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)
  • Ability to operate appropriate computer or test equipment associated with position (e.g. signal level meters, ohm meters, etc.)
  • Must possess a strong ability to read and use maps to identify routes to customer homes.
  • Must have the ability to safely operate a company vehicle
  • Ability to use basic cable installation tools and hand tools (electric drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers) and perform jobs from high places (on poles and roofs,) including climbing poles with proper equipment (safety belt, strap, climbers,) ladders, and bucket trucks (18 to 20 feet,) as determined by the system's requirements.
  • Reads general system layouts from blueprints, basic knowledge of mathematics
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC,) the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC,) the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), various state and local codes including G.O. 95 and G.O. 128, (when applicable,) and the policies and procedures for CATV installation activities.
  • Manipulates connectors, fasteners, wire and use hand tools, works in areas with exposure to moderate noise levels.
  • Regular, consistent and punctual attendance. Must be able to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as necessary.
  • Vision ability: close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus and able to manipulate objects such as pens, keyboard and mouse.
  • Normal work shift may include weekends; may include 10 hour days for 4 days a week and available to work overtime including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Exposure to moderate noise level, dogs or other animals, construction areas, or the public in general, may be a concern.

Education

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED. Technician training or certification in fiber optics is a plus.

Experience/Qualifications

  • Previous experience in fiber optic cable installation and FTTH deployment
  • Knowledge of splicing and termination technicains
  • Familiarity with FTTH equipment and hardware
  • Strong Problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Physical fitness and the ability to work in various environmental conditions

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Requires ability to travel and drive to job sites daily. Must have, prior to, and throughout employment, an acceptable background and current, valid driver’s license to commute to customer homes.

  • Frequently: Standing, walking, lifting up to 15 pounds, carrying up to 10 pounds, reaching, handling, talking, hearing, repetitive motion, eye/hand coordination.   • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to extreme weather conditions.
