What is fertility billing?

Fertility billing refers to the process of managing and submitting insurance claims and payments for fertility treatments, such as IVF, egg freezing, and other assisted reproductive technologies. Professionals in fertility billing work with patients, clinics, and insurance providers to ensure accurate coding, claim submission, and reimbursement for services rendered. They also help patients understand their insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs related to fertility treatments.

What are some common challenges faced in a fertility billing role and how can they be managed?

Professionals in Fertility Billing often encounter complex insurance policies, frequent claim denials, and rapidly changing billing codes specific to fertility treatments. Navigating these challenges requires attention to detail, ongoing education about insurance regulations, and proactive communication with both patients and payers. Many find it helpful to work closely with clinical staff and insurance coordinators to ensure accurate coding and timely claim submission, which minimizes delays and improves reimbursement rates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fertility billing specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fertility Billing Specialist, you need a solid understanding of medical billing and coding, insurance processes, and knowledge of fertility treatment terminology, often supported by experience or certification in medical billing. Familiarity with billing software, electronic health records (EHR), and insurance verification systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills are valuable soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate claims processing, timely reimbursements, and effective patient and provider communication in the sensitive area of fertility services.

Job description

About First Fertility

First Fertility partners with leading fertility clinics across the country that share our commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care. Our network of physicians, nurses, and support staff works directly with patients to help them find the right path to parenthood. We're looking for people who bring that same level of care to every interaction, on the clinical side and behind the scenes.

The Role

We're hiring a Billing Specialist to join our centralized Billing Team in this full-time, remote position. You'll manage billing inquiries, resolve insurance claims, and serve as a key point of contact for patients and providers. We're looking for someone detail-oriented and resourceful, with the judgment to handle sensitive patient and financial information with care.

What You'll Do

You'll manage the daily flow of billing operations while building strong relationships with patients and providers.

  • Manage timely billing, respond to patient inquiries, and follow up on outstanding claims
  • Engage with insurance carriers to resolve non-payment issues, correct and resubmit claim errors, and respond promptly to phone and written inquiries
  • Oversee the insurance appeals process to ensure timely resolution
  • Research patient benefit eligibility and claim status through insurance carrier websites
  • Field incoming billing calls, resolving inquiries directly or routing them to the right department
  • Manage difficult patient interactions professionally, providing clear and effective resolutions
  • Give patients accurate, clear information about billing procedures so they understand their next steps
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality when handling patient information
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for providers and administration on billing matters, and recommend process improvements that support collections and cash flow
What We're Looking For
  • Minimum of 3 years of medical billing experience in a healthcare setting (women's health or fertility experience preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of CPT and ICD coding
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong customer service skills and a professional approach to every interaction
  • Ability to stay calm and effective under pressure
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment
Schedule

This is a full-time, remote position with a Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST schedule.

Compensation is $23 to $26 per hour, based on experience.
