Description
The Kentucky Department of Education is a service agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and part of theEducation and Workforce Development Cabinet. The department provides resources and guidance to Kentucky'spublic schools and districts as they implement the state's P-12 education requirements. The department alsoserves as the state liaison for federal education requirements and funding opportunities.
The department is led by an appointed commissioner of education, who is hired by and answers to the 11-memberKentucky Board of Education. Offices are administered by associate commissioners, and divisions within thoseoffices are administered by division directors.
The department employs approximately 425 Frankfort-based workers; 175 employees in support of the KentuckySchool for the Blind (Jefferson County) and Kentucky School for the Deaf (Boyle County); and about 518employees at the 50 Area Technology Centers across the state.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Develops and monitors a nutrition education program dealing with the prevention of disease and thepromotion of health through sound nutritional practices.
• Plan, coordinate, and provide the Health Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010. Provide technical assistance andguidance to schools and sponsors participating in programs to ensure sponsors meet the new Meal PatternGuidelines. Conduct training and workshops for school food authorities/sponsors on requirement of new mealpattern and six cents reimbursement process.
• Provide oversight and technical assistance to program coordinators performing reviews ofschools/sponsors certification documentation. Coordinate and oversee the on-sight validation review ofcertified school food authorities.
• Interprets and evaluates nutrition material and regulations regulated to Health Hunger Free KIDS Act2010. Provide technical assistance and training to local schools and sponsors in preparing menus andnutritional analysis.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

This is a federally funded time limited (FFTL) position. This means the position is paid entirely as theresult of a federal grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the federal grant thatfunds the positions. An employee appointed to an FFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirementsfor the classification but is not required to take an examination or be graded through the testing andevaluation process. Further, an employee appointed to an FFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. An FFTL employee is eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit)employee in a permanent position.

Applicants currently under contract with a local school district are required to provide a written releasefrom their superintendent prior to an offer of employment is given.

Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
