To thrive as a Features Producer, you need strong editorial judgment, storytelling ability, and experience in content planning, often supported by a relevant degree in journalism, media, or communications. Familiarity with editing software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro), content management systems, and broadcast or digital production tools is commonly required. Excellent communication, creativity, and organizational skills help you collaborate with teams and manage multiple projects seamlessly. These skills are crucial for creating engaging, high-quality features that meet audience expectations and production deadlines.

What is a Features Producer?

A Features Producer is responsible for developing, planning, and producing feature content for television, radio, digital platforms, or print media. They focus on stories that provide depth, human interest, or background to news events, rather than breaking news itself. Their role involves researching topics, conducting interviews, writing scripts, overseeing filming or recording, and editing the final product. Features Producers collaborate closely with reporters, editors, and other production staff to ensure engaging and high-quality storytelling.

What is the difference between Features Producer vs Content Producer?

AspectFeatures ProducerContent Producer
Primary FocusDeveloping and managing specific features or segments for media or entertainment projectsCreating, editing, and publishing various types of content across platforms
Skills & CredentialsProject management, technical knowledge, storytelling, media production skillsWriting, editing, multimedia skills, content strategy
Work EnvironmentMedia companies, TV/film production, digital media teamsMedia outlets, digital platforms, marketing teams

While both roles involve media production, a Features Producer primarily focuses on developing specific segments or features within a project, often requiring technical and project management skills. In contrast, a Content Producer handles the overall creation and distribution of content across various channels. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in media industries.

How does a Features Producer typically collaborate with writers and editors during the production process?

A Features Producer works closely with writers to develop story ideas, refine angles, and ensure content aligns with editorial standards. They often coordinate with editors to manage deadlines, oversee revisions, and integrate multimedia elements such as images or videos. Regular meetings and clear communication are essential, as the Features Producer acts as a bridge between creative contributors and the editorial team to ensure high-quality, engaging features are delivered on schedule.
