What is an FEA analyst?

FEA Analysts are professionals who use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software to simulate and analyze the behavior of structures, components, or systems under various physical conditions. They help engineers predict how products will react to real-world forces, such as heat, vibration, and stress, before they are built. FEA Analysts interpret the simulation results, identify potential design flaws, and suggest improvements to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency. Their work is essential in industries like automotive, aerospace, civil engineering, and manufacturing.

What are some common challenges faced by an FEA analyst when working on complex engineering projects?

FEA Analysts often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling complex geometries, selecting appropriate boundary conditions, and ensuring mesh quality to achieve reliable simulation results. Additionally, balancing project deadlines with the need for thorough validation and verification of results can be demanding. Collaboration with design engineers and project managers is essential to clarify requirements and address any discrepancies between simulation results and real-world testing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FEA analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FEA Analyst, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, finite element analysis techniques, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or aerospace engineering. Proficiency in FEA software such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or NASTRAN, as well as familiarity with CAD tools, is essential and sometimes complemented by relevant certifications. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in interpreting results and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These capabilities ensure accurate simulations, reliable structural assessments, and effective integration of analysis results into the design and development process.

What is the difference between Fea Analyst vs Structural Engineer?

AspectFea AnalystStructural Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like FE or PE often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Civil or Structural Engineering, PE license often required
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based, using simulation softwareOffice and fieldwork, overseeing construction and design
Industry UsageCommon in aerospace, automotive, civil engineering for analysisPrimarily in construction, infrastructure, and building design

Fea Analysts focus on finite element analysis to evaluate structural performance using specialized software, while Structural Engineers design and oversee the construction of structures. Both roles require engineering credentials, but their daily tasks and industry applications differ.

Is a Fea Analyst a good career?

A Fea (Finite Element Analysis) analyst is a specialized engineering role focused on using simulation software to assess product durability and performance. It offers opportunities in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, often requiring strong technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles. The career can be stable and rewarding for those with expertise in simulation tools and problem-solving abilities.

Job description

Position Overview
Join our team as a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Engineer and help shape the future of our current and next-generation vehicles. We're looking for a highly motivated, well-rounded engineer with strong structural design fundamentals and a genuine passion for advanced analysis methods.
In this role, you'll move seamlessly between classical hand calculations, traditional FEA, non-traditional/meshless analysis tools, and data analysis to enable fast, informed decisions. You will collaborate closely with design and test engineering teams to develop, analyze, and optimize components and subsystems that make a real impact.
What You'll Do
  • Perform system- and sub-system-level Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to support vehicle and component-level designs.
  • Conduct linear and non-linear stress analysis for static, dynamic, shock, and vibration environments.
  • Perform bolted joint analysis using classical calculations for joint sizing.
  • Explore and apply non-traditional / meshless analysis methods and tools to accelerate early design studies and trade-offs.
  • Evaluate and validate new analysis tools and workflows, and document best practices for the broader team.
  • Provide design guidance to product teams to improve structural performance, weight, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Clearly communicate analysis assumptions, methods, and results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Prepare clear, well-structured analysis reports and presentations for diverse audiences.
  • Contribute to additional projects and responsibilities as needed, based on your interests and strengths.

Minimum Qualifications - What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in structural analysis and FEA (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Hands-on experience with the ANSA/META software suite, including model generation and manipulation.
  • Experience with analysis solvers such as Nastran/Optistruct and LS-Dyna.
  • Familiarity with Static Analysis, Modal & Direct Transient, and Frequency Response analysis methods.
  • Familiarity with bolted joint design and calculations.
  • Experience with non-traditional structural analysis tools such as SimSolid, SimLab, etc.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence presenting results to non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Teams for virtual collaboration.
  • Ability to prioritize analysis assignments with minimal guidance, manage schedule and budget, and proactively escalate issues when needed.

Skills That Will Help You Stand Out
  • Working knowledge of Siemens Teamcenter and CAD tools such as Siemens NX, PTC Creo, and/or VisMockup.
  • Experience with nCode/Glyphworks for fatigue and durability assessments.
  • Experience with vehicle-level NVH assessments in FEA.
  • Familiarity with FEA design optimization tools and workflows.
  • Experience applying machine learning or statistical methods to simulation data.
  • Python programming and scripting skills
