What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FCC Compliance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FCC Compliance Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, knowledge of radio frequency (RF) principles, and familiarity with FCC regulations, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, EMC testing tools, and understanding of standards like FCC Part 15 is essential, and certifications such as iNARTE EMC Engineer can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help in interpreting regulations and coordinating with cross-functional teams. Mastering these skills ensures product compliance, prevents costly delays, and maintains legal market access.

What are the main challenges faced by FCC Compliance Engineers during the product development lifecycle?

FCC Compliance Engineers often encounter challenges such as keeping up with evolving regulatory standards, ensuring all product designs meet specific electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements, and coordinating compliance testing schedules with tight product development timelines. They work closely with design, testing, and documentation teams to identify and resolve potential compliance issues early, which requires strong communication and project management skills. Managing documentation and preparing thorough reports for regulatory submissions can also be time-intensive but is essential for avoiding costly market delays.

What are FCC Compliance Engineers?

FCC Compliance Engineers are professionals responsible for ensuring that electronic products and systems meet the regulations and standards set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. They conduct testing, documentation, and certification processes to verify that devices do not cause harmful interference and comply with radio frequency (RF) exposure limits. These engineers often work closely with design and manufacturing teams to address compliance issues and maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving FCC rules. Their role is crucial in helping companies bring products to market legally and efficiently.

Job description

PRODUCT COMPLIANCE ENGINEER (STARLINK)

SpaceX is leveraging its experience building rockets and spacecraft to deploy Starlink, the world's most advanced broadband internet system. Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation that provides fast, reliable internet to millions of users worldwide. We design, build, manufacture, and operate all parts of the system including thousands of satellites and millions of customer kits. Our customers currently include teachers in the most remote parts of the Amazon, researchers in Antarctica, digital nomads who travel via RV, emergency responders, commercial airlines, cruise lines, and residential users who live in more rural or developing areas. While users can get online within minutes almost anywhere in the world, we've only begun to scratch the surface of Starlink's potential. We are looking for best-in-class engineers to help maximize Starlink's utility for individuals, communities, and businesses.

Product Compliance Engineers will play a critical role as SpaceX strives to deliver internet to those that need it most. They will drive regulatory efforts, impact internal design decisions, and obtain the product certifications needed to sell and ship millions of consumer-facing devices. These devices - including Starlink dishes, Wi-Fi routers, power supply, accessories, etc. - are designed and manufactured completely in-house by SpaceX. We are looking for a multi-disciplinary Product Compliance Engineer who is highly capable across EMC, Product Safety, Wireless, or Environmental compliance. This role will support broader certification needs for Starlink hardware and serve as a key technical leader for global market access programs. Engineers on the team will be hands-on, regularly interact with multiple technical disciplines, and ultimately ensure that Starlink is a global success.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive end-to-end product compliance and global market access for Starlink hardware (EMC, Safety, Radio, and Environmental)
  • Coordinate certification programs across multiple disciplines and geographies
  • Collaborate with design teams to embed compliance requirements early in the development cycle
  • Manage relationships with test labs, Notified Bodies, and certification agencies worldwide
  • Own technical construction files and support global regulatory submissions
  • Identify and resolve complex compliance issues across safety, EMC, RF, and materials

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in and engineering or STEM discipline
  • 1+ years of experience in compliance and certification engineering (internship experience is applicable)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 4+ years of progressive experience in product compliance engineering
  • Broad experience across EMC, Product Safety, RF/Wireless, and Environmental compliance
  • Hands-on experience with FCC, CE, UL, IEC, EN, RED, RoHS, REACH and related standards
  • Demonstrated success certifying consumer electronics or telecommunications equipment for global markets
  • Strong project management and cross-functional leadership skills
  • Ability to quickly ramp up on new regulations and standards
  • Excellent communicator who can translate complex technical/regulatory topics for engineering audiences

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed for mission critical deadlines
