What is a farrowing technician?

A Farrowing Technician is responsible for the care of sows and piglets during the farrowing process. Their duties include monitoring animal health, assisting with births, ensuring proper nutrition, and maintaining clean and safe environments. They also perform routine health checks and provide necessary medical care to support piglet survival and growth. This role is essential for maintaining herd productivity and ensuring the welfare of the animals. Farrowing Technicians typically work on farms or in large-scale swine production facilities.

What does a farrowing technician do?

A typical day for a Farrowing Technician involves closely monitoring sows during the farrowing process, assisting with piglet deliveries, and ensuring newborn piglets receive adequate care such as warmth, nutrition, and health checks. You may be responsible for cleaning and preparing farrowing pens, maintaining detailed records of births and livestock health, and identifying signs of illness in both sows and piglets. The role usually involves working as part of a team with other animal care staff and supervisors to support the overall health and productivity of the swine herd. While the work can be physically demanding and requires attention to detail during critical birthing times, it offers the opportunity to develop valuable animal husbandry skills and advance to more specialized positions in livestock management.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a farrowing technician?

To thrive as a Farrowing Technician, you need hands-on experience in animal husbandry, specifically swine management, and a basic understanding of farrowing processes and livestock health. Familiarity with specialized tools and equipment for piglet delivery and care, as well as training in animal welfare and biosecurity protocols, is important. Attention to detail, strong observation skills, and a proactive attitude are valuable soft skills for monitoring animal well-being and addressing any issues promptly. These abilities ensure healthy litters, minimize animal stress, and support efficient operations in swine production facilities.
