What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a farm owner operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Farm Owner Operator, you need a solid understanding of agricultural practices, business management, and often a relevant degree or extensive experience in farming. Familiarity with farm management software, equipment operation, and certifications in pesticide application or food safety are commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help in managing staff, navigating challenges, and building relationships with suppliers and customers. These competencies are crucial for ensuring efficient farm operations, profitability, and long-term sustainability.

What is a farm owner operator?

Farm Owner Operators are individuals who own and manage their own farms, overseeing daily operations, crop or livestock production, and all business aspects of the farm. They are responsible for making key decisions about planting, harvesting, equipment purchasing, budgeting, and hiring labor. Farm Owner Operators must also ensure compliance with agricultural regulations and often handle marketing and sales of their products. This role requires a broad set of skills including business management, agriculture knowledge, and hands-on operational abilities.

The Farm Owner Operator manages or owns the farm, making strategic decisions, while the Farm Hand assists with daily farm tasks without ownership duties. Both roles are integral to farm operations but differ significantly in scope and responsibilities.

What are some common challenges farm owner operators face when managing both daily operations and long-term business strategy?

Farm Owner Operators often juggle hands-on tasks like crop management, livestock care, and equipment maintenance alongside strategic responsibilities such as budgeting, marketing, and regulatory compliance. Balancing these demands can be challenging, especially during peak seasons or when unexpected issues arise, such as weather disruptions or market fluctuations. Successful operators typically develop strong organizational skills and delegate tasks when possible, and they continually adapt by learning new technologies and best practices to keep their farms competitive and sustainable.

Job description

About MGT Insurance
MGT is the first AI-driven, neo-insurer focused on evolving commercial P&C insurance for the brokers and small business owners. By combining the expertise of industry veterans with state-of-the-art technology, we are ushering in the next evolution of commercial insurance and working to move the industry forward through the use of modern technology, better processes, and a rock-star team. We seek visionary leaders who thrive in dynamic, entrepreneurial settings, and excel in autonomous roles.
What You'll Do
Farm Underwriting Authority & Risk Judgment
  • Serve as MGT's primary technical underwriter for farm and agribusiness submissions including evaluating risk quality, coverage structure, class eligibility, and pricing appropriateness
  • Make independent underwriting decisions on standard and moderately complex farm risks within delegated authority; escalate non-standard or high-complexity risks with a clear recommendation
  • Underwrite across the full spectrum of MGT's farm appetite: farm owners, farm property, farm liability, farm auto, and related agribusiness coverages
  • Review and assess farm renewal accounts for changes in operation, risk profile, loss history, and continued eligibility
  • Stay current on farm market conditions, emerging agricultural risks, weather and climate trends, and competitive dynamics

Guideline & Appetite Ownership
  • Own MGT's farm underwriting guidelines while maintaining accuracy, identifying gaps, and proposing updates informed by loss experience and market changes
  • Define and document farm-specific appetite parameters: preferred operations, ineligible classes, geographic considerations, and coverage limitations
  • Partner with the Senior Lead, Underwriting on farm appetite strategy and what MGT targets, where we compete on selection, and where we tighten
  • Develop and maintain farm-specific referral criteria and escalation protocols for complex or non-standard risks
  • Contribute farm underwriting logic to Athena our MGT's AI underwriting agent including appetite rules, class-level guidance, and edge case reasoning

Portfolio Quality & Performance
  • Monitor the farm book's performance: loss ratios, class mix, geographic concentration, and underwriting quality on an ongoing basis
  • Identify early signals of deterioration, adverse selection, or pricing inadequacy in the farm portfolio and surface them with recommendations
  • Partner with Actuarial on farm rate adequacy reviews, loss development, and segment-level profitability analysis
  • Support farm-specific reporting and contribute underwriting analysis to portfolio performance reviews
  • Participate in reinsurance submissions and treaty discussions as MGT's farm underwriting subject matter expert

Broker & Distribution Partnership
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with MGT's appointed brokers and wholesale partners who specialize in farm and agribusiness
  • Communicate farm appetite, eligibility criteria, and coverage positions clearly to agents and brokers including complex declination rationale
  • Support Distribution in developing and communicating farm appetite to new and existing broker partners
  • Participate in broker calls, agency visits, and market-facing activities as MGT's farm underwriting representative

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with the Senior Lead, Underwriting on farm guideline development, portfolio strategy, and appetite decisions
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering to embed farm underwriting logic into systems, tools, and the Athena AI platform
  • Collaborate with Compliance and Legal on farm policy language, state filing requirements, and coverage positions
  • Contribute farm perspective to product development, coverage enhancement, and pricing discussions with the Senior Lead, Insurance Product

What We're Looking For
  • 7-12+ years of farm and agribusiness underwriting experience
  • Carrier or MGA farm underwriting; senior underwriter or farm underwriting specialist experience strongly preferred
  • Deep technical expertise in farm and agribusiness underwriting including farm owners, farm property and liability, farm auto, crop, and related agribusiness coverages
  • Proven track record managing a farm book of business with accountability for underwriting quality, consistency, and portfolio performance
  • Experience developing or contributing to farm underwriting guidelines, appetite frameworks, and referral protocols
  • Strong knowledge of agricultural operations, property valuation on farm risks, livestock exposures, and rural liability considerations
  • Familiarity with geographic and weather-related risk factors that affect farm underwriting decisions across different regions
  • Experience working with broker and wholesale distribution in a farm or agribusiness context
  • Comfort operating in technology-forward environments including experience with AI-assisted tools, modern quoting systems, or policy admin platforms a strong plus

Traits We Value
Farm-native. You understand agricultural operations, property, and liability from the ground up and not just from a coverage form. You know what you're looking at when you evaluate a farm risk.
Technically authoritative. Brokers, product managers, and engineers come to you with hard farm questions. Your answers are clear, reasoned, and hold up to scrutiny.
Portfolio thinker. You don't just evaluate individual risks. You think about the cumulative shape of the farm book including geographic concentration, operation mix, weather exposure and you manage accordingly.
Builder. You're energized by the opportunity to strengthen and grow MGT's farm program including guidelines, appetite, AI logic, broker relationships rather than maintain what already exists.
High ownership. You take accountability for the quality and performance of the farm book. You identify gaps, raise them, and drive toward solutions.
Growth-oriented. You want to grow into broader underwriting leadership over time and see MGT as the right place to do it.
Compensation
Base Salary: $80,000 - $125,000, commensurate with experience and location
Equity: Meaningful equity participation as we want you to build with us, not just for us
Benefits: Comprehensive health, dental, and vision; 401(k); flexible PTO
We recognize that no candidate will meet every qualification and encourage individuals with relevant experience and interest in the role to apply.
Please note: MGT does not accept unsolicited resumes from staffing vendors, including recruitment agencies and/or search firms. Please do not forward resumes to our jobs alias, MGT employees, or any other company location. Any submittals without a prior signed agreement will become property of MGT.
Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
At MGT, inclusion drives excellence and belonging sustains it. We believe diverse perspectives make us stronger, more innovative, and more connected to the people we serve. We value every voice, champion equity, and create space where all people can grow and succeed together.
Equal Employment Opportunity Statement
MGT is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We do not discriminate in employment opportunities or practices based on race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, marital status, military or veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable law.
All employment decisions are based on qualifications, merit, and business needs. We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities throughout the application and employment process. If you need assistance or accommodations, please contact us at accommodations@mgtinsurance.com.

It is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, or qualifications required. MGT Insurance reserves the right to modify, interpret, or apply this job description in any way the company deems appropriate.
