Job description

Ice Crew Member

Location: Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids, MI

Job Type: Part-Time / Event-Based

Job Summary:

We are seeking skilled and confident skaters to join our Ice Crew for an American Hockey League (AHL) team. As part of the Ice Crew, your primary responsibility is to maintain the quality of the playing surface by removing ice shavings and snow buildup during stoppages of play. This role is crucial to both player performance and fan experience. It requires proficient skating ability, attention to detail, and the professionalism to stay focused while performing in front of large crowds.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Skate onto the ice during scheduled stoppages of play to shovel and remove ice shavings and snow buildup quickly and efficiently.
  • Maintain awareness of your surroundings, including players, officials, other crew members, and ice resurfacing machines.
  • Help ensure the playing surface meets the expectations and standards of the teams and officials.
  • Remain focused on the task at hand and avoid being distracted by the crowd or in-game environment.
  • Demonstrate confidence and poise while skating in front of large, live audiences.
  • Assist with other game day operations as assigned, including limited off-ice tasks as needed.
  • Follow all direction from Ice Operations and Game Day Supervisors.
  • Use your own hockey skates (preferred), or arena-issued skates if needed.

Requirements:

  • Proficient ice skating ability—comfortable skating at speed and stopping in control.
  • Ability to push heavy snow loads across the ice surface quickly and safely.
  • Strong awareness and discipline to stay focused during high-energy games.
  • Comfortable performing in front of large crowds and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to follow directions from supervisors and work as part of a team.
  • Punctual, reliable, and able to commit to the full game schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
