What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Family Law Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Family Law Associate, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and a solid understanding of family law statutes and legal procedures. Familiarity with case management software, legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and document drafting tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and negotiation abilities help you support clients through sensitive matters and build effective relationships. These skills are crucial for delivering strategic legal counsel, achieving favorable outcomes, and maintaining professionalism during emotionally charged cases.

What are some common challenges Family Law Associates face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Family Law Associates often handle several cases at once, each with unique emotional and legal complexities. Balancing court deadlines, client communications, and document preparation requires strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. Additionally, associates must manage sensitive client relationships with empathy while maintaining professional boundaries. Developing efficient case management strategies and leveraging support from paralegals or senior attorneys can help mitigate these challenges.

What is a Family Law Associate?

A Family Law Associate is a licensed attorney who specializes in handling legal matters related to family relationships, such as divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, and adoption. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced attorneys or partners in a law firm. Family Law Associates are responsible for conducting research, drafting legal documents, representing clients in court, and providing legal advice on family law issues. Their goal is to help clients navigate complex and often emotionally charged legal situations within the family law system.

Do You Want Real Courtroom Experience—Not Just Paperwork?

Harper & McCoy is growing, and we’re looking for a Family Law Associate Attorney who’s ready to step in, take ownership, and make a real impact.

This is not a sit-back-and-observe role.

This is for someone who wants to handle cases, appear in court, and advocate for clients from day one.

What You’ll Be Doing

- Handling family law cases from start to finish

- Appearing in court on RFOs, hearings, and conferences

- Drafting motions, pleadings, and discovery

- Advising clients through custody, support, and property issues

- Negotiating settlements and litigating when needed

- Managing your own caseload

The Work Matters

This isn’t volume for the sake of volume.

This is strategic, meaningful family law work where your advocacy matters.

Who We’re Looking For

- Licensed California attorney (or newly admitted)

- Strong writing and analytical skills

- Comfortable in court or eager to get there quickly

- Organized, responsive, and able to manage deadlines

- A self-starter who takes ownership of their cases

Preference If You Have

- Family law experience

- Litigation experience

- Confidence handling hearings independently

Why This Role Stands Out

- Real courtroom experience early and often

- Direct client interaction

- Opportunity to grow quickly as a family law attorney

- Supportive, team-oriented environment

- A firm that values initiative, accountability, and results

Location

Riverside, CA (with occasional appearances in surrounding counties)

If You’re Looking For

- More courtroom time

- More responsibility

- Real growth in family law

This is your opportunity.
