Program Overview
The Student Service & Leadership Collaborative (SSLC) Internship Program is a structured experiential learning program that connects UNO students with local nonprofit organizations. Interns are hired as UNO student employees who work with a designated nonprofit partner throughout the academic year (Fall 2026-Spring 2027), contributing to projects that advance organizational missions and address community needs across the Omaha community. Nonprofit partners represent a range of focus areas including arts and culture, education, economic sufficiency, environmental sustainability, health and wellness, international service, and social justice.
In addition to their nonprofit internship, students participate in a cohort-based leadership experience. This component of the program includes workshops, networking opportunities, and reflection activities designed to help students develop and articulate career readiness skills through their internship experiences.
Essential Functions
Collaborative Student Interns participate in two primary components of the Student Service & Leadership Collaborative: a nonprofit internship and a cohort-based leadership experience.
1. Nonprofit Internship Responsibilities (Approximately 10 hours per week)
Responsibilities will vary depending on the needs of the nonprofit partner organization but may include:
  • Supporting program coordination and initiatives that advance the organization's mission
  • Assisting with research, data collection, and program evaluation projects
  • Supporting marketing and communications efforts, including social media, storytelling, and digital content creation
  • Assisting with event planning, outreach, and community engagement activities
  • Contributing to special projects that strengthen organizational capacity and community impact
  • Supporting youth programming, mentorship initiatives, or community education efforts when applicable
  • Collaborating with nonprofit staff on projects that support organizational priorities and community impact

2. Leadership Development Responsibilities (Approximately 4 hours per week)
Interns also participate in a cohort-based leadership and professional development experience designed to strengthen career readiness and leadership skills.
Responsibilities include:
  • Participating in required cohort meetings and leadership development sessions
  • Attending professional development workshops and networking events with nonprofit partners
  • Engaging in reflection and learning activities designed to connect internship experiences with career readiness competencies
  • Contributing to an end-of-year presentation or showcase highlighting project work and professional growth

Work Schedule
10-14 hours per week during the academic year. Interns typically spend approximately 10 hours per week working with their nonprofit partner, with remaining hours dedicated to cohort meetings and leadership development activities. Schedules are coordinate

Required Qualifications
Successful applicants demonstrate a commitment to community engagement and an interest in nonprofit organizations and service-oriented work.
Applicants must:
  • Be a current full-time UNO student (enrolled in at least 12 credit hours for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours for graduate students per semester)
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrate interest in community engagement, nonprofit work, or service-oriented careers through volunteer experience, coursework, leadership activities, or career goals
  • Be able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Possess strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Have knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar productivity tools
  • Have a valid driver's license and/or reliable transportation to and from nonprofit partner sites

Availability for occasional evening or weekend events may be required depending on nonprofit programming.
Preferred Qualifications
Students with declared majors or minors related to Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, or other community-focused fields may find this opportunity especially beneficial.
