What is facilities management?

Facilities management is the professional discipline focused on the efficient and effective delivery of support services for the organizations that it serves. This includes the maintenance and operation of buildings, ensuring safety, overseeing cleaning and security, and managing space and infrastructure. Facilities managers also handle vendor contracts, ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and often play a key role in sustainability initiatives. Their goal is to create a safe, comfortable, and productive environment for employees and visitors while optimizing costs and resources.

How does a facilities manager typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Facilities Managers play a central role in ensuring that the physical workspace meets the needs of all departments. They regularly coordinate with HR for space planning, IT for infrastructure upgrades, and finance for budgeting facility improvements.
