What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Fabrication, and why are they important?

To thrive in Fabrication, you need a solid understanding of blueprint reading, material properties, and hands-on skills in cutting, welding, and assembling components, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machinery, welding equipment, and CAD software, along with relevant certifications like AWS welding certification, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills that help ensure quality and efficiency. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing precise, safe, and reliable fabricated products that meet industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced in a fabrication role, and how can new hires prepare for them?

In a fabrication role, one common challenge is adapting to frequently changing project requirements, which may involve working with different materials, tools, and specifications. New hires can prepare by developing strong attention to detail, maintaining flexibility, and proactively seeking clarification when blueprints or instructions change. Additionally, effective communication and collaboration with engineers, supervisors, and other team members are crucial to ensuring projects stay on track and meet quality standards. Investing time in learning about workplace safety procedures and equipment maintenance can also help new fabricators succeed and avoid common pitfalls.

What is fabrication in manufacturing?

Fabrication in manufacturing refers to the process of constructing products or structures from raw materials, typically involving cutting, bending, and assembling various components. It is commonly used in industries such as metalworking, where sheet metal, pipes, or other materials are shaped and joined to create finished items. Fabrication can include techniques like welding, machining, and forming, and often requires specialized equipment and skilled workers. The end products can range from simple tools to complex machinery and structures.

What is the difference between Fabrication vs Welder?

Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, construction, heavy industryConstruction, manufacturing, repair services
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for skills overlap and job scopeRelated but more specialized in welding tasks

Fabrication involves designing, cutting, and assembling metal parts, often requiring technical skills and certifications. Welding is a specific skill within fabrication focused on joining metals through welding techniques. While fabricators may perform welding, welders specialize in that process. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and construction, but fabrication covers a broader scope of metal work, whereas welding is a specialized skill within that scope.

About the Team Hiring

The Services team partners with Sales, R&D, and Customer Success to deliver high-impact consulting and pre-sales support across AEC and MFG verticals. The team helps clients adopt BIM and cloud technologies through strategic engagements, workflow design, and solution implementation, ensuring Graitec’s offerings deliver measurable business value.

Overview

The BIM Technical Consultant – MEP (Fabrication Focus) is a highly technical, hands-on role focused on enabling customers to transform BIM models into fabrication-ready, production-grade outputs within MEP environments.

This role is not a traditional advisory or high-level BIM consultancy position. It is centered on technical execution, model validation, and fabrication workflow enablement.

You will work directly with engineering and fabrication teams to ensure that Revit MEP models are correctly structured, coordinated, and aligned with real-world manufacturing and installation requirements.

A key part of the role is supporting the transition from design intent models to constructible and fabrication-ready models, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with project standards such as LOD requirements, shop drawing readiness, and coordination rules.

You will be actively involved in:

  • Supporting MEP fabrication workflows using Autodesk Revit and related tools
  • Ensuring models are suitable for downstream fabrication, coordination, and installation
  • Identifying and resolving model issues that impact constructability or manufacturing
  • Supporting engineering teams in improving model quality and automation of repetitive tasks
  • Working closely with contractors, fabricators, and engineering teams on real project delivery
  • Supporting technical pre-sales discussions focused on fabrication workflows and production challenges
  • Contributing to internal knowledge on MEP fabrication best practices and workflows

This role is ideal for someone who understands how MEP models become physical systems in construction and manufacturing environments, not just how they are designed in BIM.

Responsibilities
  • Proven experience in BIM, MEP engineering, or technical delivery roles within AEC or manufacturing environments.

  • Strong hands-on experience with Autodesk Revit MEP in real project environments is essential.

  • Experience working with fabrication models, construction-ready deliverables, or design-to-manufacturing workflows.

  • Good understanding of MEP systems (HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing) in practical, project-based environments.

  • Experience in coordination between design, engineering, and fabrication teams.

  • Exposure to BIM-to-fabrication workflows, detailing, or constructability optimization is highly valued.

  • Previous experience in technical support, implementation, or engineering delivery roles is preferred over pure consulting backgrounds.

Qualifications
  • Strong technical expertise in BIM with a clear focus on MEP systems and fabrication workflows.

  • Advanced, hands-on experience in MEP (mandatory).

  • Good understanding of fabrication requirements, including:

    • LOD (Level of Development)
    • Constructability constraints
    • Shop drawing preparation principles
    • Coordination with fabrication and installation teams
  • Solid knowledge of MEP systems and how they translate into real-world construction and manufacturing processes.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, execution-oriented mindset.

  • Ability to work closely with engineers, contractors, and fabricators in delivery-focused environments.

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Construction Engineering, or related technical discipline.

  • Experience with Autodesk ecosystem tools (Navisworks, ACC, AutoCAD, Fabrication CADmep) is a strong advantage.

Interview Process

At Graitec, we’re proud to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace.

We value our employees for who they are and the contributions they bring, encouraging everyone to be their

authentic selves at work. This diversity helps us better serve the wide range of customers and markets we

operate in. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and assess candidates solely on their skills and

ability to succeed in the role.

Graitec uses AI to support and streamline internal processes; however, all application reviews, screening, and

hiring decisions are made solely by our Talent Acquisition team and hiring managers.

  • Application – Submit your CV or apply via Graitec Careers.
