Job description

Position Description
Position Summary:
The Piping Fabrication Project Manager is responsible for managing piping fabrication projects built from customer-supplied and third-party drawings, serving as the primary customer-facing contact throughout the project lifecycle. This role ensures projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with quality and code requirements, while resolving drawing questions, RFIs, and scope changes directly with customers and their engineering representatives. The position requires strong project management skills, a working knowledge of pipe fabrication and applicable piping codes, and cross-functional collaboration to drive successful project execution.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary customer-facing point of contact for assigned piping fabrication projects, managing communication and facilitating kickoff, site visit, and closeout meetings from project start through delivery.
  • Review and interpret customer-supplied fabrication drawings and specifications (isometrics, spool drawings, general arrangement drawings) provided by third-party engineering firms or customers, identifying discrepancies, gaps, or fabrication concerns prior to release to the shop.
  • Coordinate directly with customers and their engineering representatives to resolve drawing questions, requests for information (RFIs), scope clarifications, and constructability/fabricability concerns, escalating issues to the customer or engineer of record as needed.
  • Lead and manage piping fabrication projects from purchase order receipt through shipment, ensuring alignment with customer requirements, applicable codes (e.g., ASME B31.3, B31.9), and TG quality standards.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including but not limited to Estimating, Engineering, Quality, Procurement, Shop Supervisors, and Account Managers, to plan and execute fabrication scope.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, milestones, and fabrication sequencing to meet customer delivery dates.
  • Track and manage project budgets and labor hours throughout the project duration to avoid overruns; report variances to management.
  • Review the bill of materials against customer-supplied drawings for accuracy and coordinate with Procurement to ensure materials are available at each stage of fabrication.
  • Coordinate with Quality to compile and deliver project documentation required for customer turnover (e.g., material certifications, weld and NDE records) in line with customer specifications and delivery schedule.
  • Provide regular project status updates, look-ahead schedules, and progress reports to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Manage change orders and change management processes resulting from drawing revisions, scope changes, or field conditions, ensuring proper documentation, pricing approval, and smooth transitions during project execution.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve project-level issues that arise during the fabrication process, escalating quality nonconformances to Quality/CWI for disposition, and drive on-time, on-budget project performance through customer feedback and project metrics.

Position Requirements
Preferred Minimum Knowledge, Experience & Skills Requirements:
  • A minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent. Continued education in fabrication, project management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in piping/pipe fabrication project management, shop floor leadership, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of piping codes (e.g., ASME B31.3, B31.9) and pipe fabrication processes, including cutting, fitting, welding, and NDE.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometric drawings, and spool drawings, including those supplied by third-party engineering firms.
  • Project management experience and MRP/ERP system proficiency preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to manage customer relationships and expectations directly and present to small and large groups.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and results-driven with the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders effectively.
  • Experience with cross-functional team coordination and collaboration.
