What are FAA Electrical Engineers?

FAA Electrical Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain electrical systems and components for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Their work ensures the safety and reliability of the nation's air traffic control systems, airport infrastructure, and other aviation-related technologies. They may be involved in projects ranging from power distribution and lighting at airports to the integration of advanced communication and navigation systems. These engineers also help ensure compliance with federal safety regulations and may participate in research to improve aviation technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FAA Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FAA Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, a relevant bachelor's degree, and a strong understanding of aviation systems and regulations. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as CAD software, FAA certification processes, and avionics testing systems is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and ensure regulatory compliance. These skills are crucial to ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of electrical systems in aviation environments.

What are some common challenges faced by FAA Electrical Engineers when working on aviation projects?

FAA Electrical Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring compliance with rigorous safety and regulatory standards while designing or certifying aircraft electrical systems. These engineers must stay updated on evolving FAA regulations and work closely with multidisciplinary teams, such as avionics, mechanical, and certification specialists, to resolve complex technical issues. Balancing innovation with strict adherence to safety protocols and documentation requirements can be demanding, but it is essential for the integrity and reliability of aviation systems.

Job description

Electrical Engineer – Aviation

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer – Aviation to join our team in Tampa, FL, or Dallas, TX.

We are seeking an experienced Airport Electrical Engineer (4–8 years) to join our Aviation Electrical team. In this role, you will support and lead airfield electrical design projects, bringing your technical expertise to runways, taxiways, NAVAIDS, approach lighting, and related airport development programs.

Your Role

You will take on more advanced, independent, and leadership-oriented responsibilities than an entry-level engineer, including:

  • Lead or support the planning, design, and production of airfield electrical engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Develop airfield lighting and electrical system designs (e.g., runways, taxiways, aprons, ALCMS, vaults, NAVAIDS, and supporting utilities).
  • Conduct engineering investigations, calculations, and feasibility studies, applying FAA Advisory Circulars, NEC, and relevant airport design standards.
  • Perform site visits and field observations of construction, resolving technical issues and supporting clients and contractors during implementation.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, photometric analyses, and contractor RFIs.
  • Coordinate design deliverables with multidisciplinary teams (civil, structures, planning).
  • Prepare reports, permitting documents, cost estimates, and design narratives.
  • Mentor junior engineers, supporting their development and reviewing their work.
  • Uphold engineering ethics and contribute to a collaborative and positive team environment.

About You

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or any other related field of study.
  • EIT required, PE preferred or ability to obtain within 1–2 years.
  • Experience preparing plans, specifications, and engineering calculations.
  • Requires minimum four (4) years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Some aviation experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience with airfield lighting, airfield electrical systems, or airport-related electrical design (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of FAA Advisory Circulars, airfield electrical standards, and applicable codes (NEC, NFPA).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microsoft Office, and Bluebeam, preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; capable of producing high-quality technical documents.
