Job description

Job Summary **OPEN TO INTERNAL RICE COUNTY EMPLOYEES ONLY** A Sergeant is a licensed law enforcement position that supervises and manages the investigation and patrol divisions of the Sheriff's Office. This position entails responding to calls for service from the public, but also deals with direction supervision of Patrol Deputies and Investigations. This position protects life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances.

Sergeants also take on multiple other duties that include grant applications and implementation, supervision of the Field Training Program, K-9 Program, Courthouse Security and Investigation Unit, Drone Training and Water Patrol. Examples of Duties Supervise all activities of personnel during an assigned shift. Supervises the Department Training Unit.

Coordinates and supervises the training, assignment, and development of subordinate officers. Writes and manages, as assigned grant funds for law enforcement programs and equipment to assist in the overall operation of the Office. Recommends purchases and maintenance of equipment.

Assists with patrol duties as needed. Takes impromptu command at crime scenes, critical incidents, life threatening situations, and natural disasters for tactical and operational purposes. Coordinates activities with supervisors or other departments; exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies; obtains advice from the County Attorney, Court Administrator, and Municipal Prosecutor's Office regarding cases, policies, and procedures.

Assists and coordinates with various agencies including, but not limited to, Social Services, FBI, BCA, DEA, DNR, State Patrol, Coroner's Office, funeral homes, Chaplain services, foster homes for placement of children, juvenile detention facilities, Probation Officers, MCF prison officials, Rice County court officials, fire department and rescue units, ambulance services, hospital personnel, SWAT teams, and multiple law enforcement agencies both internal and external. If assigned, the Sergeant participates as a diver on the Dive Team. If assigned, the Sergeant will facilitate the Use of Force training for deputies and as necessary other officers from neighboring law enforcement agencies.

If assigned to SWAT, the Sergeant will respond to emergency incidents involving special weapons and tactics following all team procedures during the incident. Incidents include but not limited to; barricaded subjects, hostage rescue, high risk warrants or arrests, and large-scale events and searches. If assigned as a canine handler, the Sergeant and K-9 will respond (when available) to incidents when a K-9 team is needed.

Performs other duties and special projects as assigned. Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: The job requires an Associate Degree in Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, or related field, and successful completion of Law Enforcement Skills Field Training Program at an accredited facility, or equivalent, as mandated by POST (or eligible for licensure by POST). Three or more years' previous law enforcement experience is required.

The Sergeant must be licensed as a peace officer in the State of Minnesota. A valid driver's license is required upon hire. The Sergeant must attend mandated training as an advanced first responder for emergency medical situations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Four year college degree (Police science or related field), other relevant experience, activities and certifications. Five years' experience. Supplemental Information SELECTION PROCESS: Included but not limited to a comprehensive application including related training and experience, assessment center, oral and written examinations, and review of employee's service record.
