Extraction Lab Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Extraction Lab Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Extraction Lab Manager, you need a solid background in chemistry or biochemistry, experience with extraction processes, and often a relevant degree or certification. Proficiency with laboratory equipment, extraction technologies (such as CO2 or ethanol extraction), and familiarity with regulatory compliance systems like GMP are typically required. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure team coordination and adherence to safety protocols. These skills and qualifications are critical for maintaining product quality, regulatory compliance, and efficient lab operations.

What are some common challenges faced by an Extraction Lab Manager in maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards?

Extraction Lab Managers often encounter challenges in ensuring their operations strictly adhere to evolving safety and regulatory requirements, especially in industries like cannabis or pharmaceuticals. They must stay updated on local, state, and federal regulations, conduct regular staff training on safety protocols, and maintain meticulous documentation for audits. Balancing efficient production with rigorous compliance can be demanding, but proactive communication, continuous process improvement, and a strong safety culture help mitigate these challenges.

They manage the daily operations of extraction labs, ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards, supervise staff, and optimize extraction processes for efficiency and quality. Their role also includes maintaining equipment, managing inventory, and ensuring all products meet quality control standards. Extraction Lab Managers often have backgrounds in chemistry, biology, or related fields and play a key role in product development and process improvement.

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

About Dragonfly Wellness

Dragonfly Wellness is Utah’s first licensed medical cannabis pharmacy and a vertically integrated cultivator and processor of medical cannabis products. We are dedicated to bringing health and happiness to our community by providing access to high-quality medicine, education, and personalized support on their cannabis journey. Our team embodies a commitment to health, community, and compassionate service, rooted in innovation and integrity.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Solventless Lab Manager to lead our solventless extraction operations and production team. This role blends hands-on technical expertise with leadership, compliance oversight, and process innovation. As Lab Manager, you will ensure the efficient, safe, and quality-focused production of solventless concentrates (e.g., live rosin, ice water hash, static hash), while upholding Dragonfly Wellness’s mission to prioritize patient wellbeing and product excellence.

This role is ideal for someone with prior experience operating extraction labs, a strong commitment to compliance and safety, and a drive to innovate within the medical cannabis industry. Your desire to bring a high level of craft quality hash making will help drive our brand into becoming one of the premium solventless companies in the nation.

Core Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Manage day-to-day solventless lab operations, ensuring consistent production flow, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee the collection, sorting, processing, and finishing of solventless extracts, maintaining high yield and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with cultivation and other processing teams to optimize feedstock quality for extraction.

Quality, Compliance & Safety

  • Maintain strict adherence to all state regulatory requirements for medical cannabis processing (quality control, labeling, inventory tracking).
  • Implement and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for cleanliness, safety (OSHA standards), and best laboratory practices.
  • Ensure all products meet internal and external quality, purity, and safety standards before release.

Team Development

  • Train, mentor, and lead lab technicians and assistants, fostering a culture of continuous learning, problem-solving, and improvement.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and support professional growth.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Experiment with new solventless techniques and technologies to improve product quality and operational efficiency.
  • Document and refine processes to scale production while maintaining consistency and integrity of products.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Quality Assurance, Compliance, Supply Chain, and Retail teams to align production goals with demand forecasts and patient needs.
  • Partner with leadership to develop production forecasts, capacity plans, and operational budgets.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of experience in cannabis extraction labs or related botanical/process labs, with a strong preference for solventless operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage processes, equipment, and small teams effectively.
  • Deep understanding of safety standards, quality control principles, and regulatory compliance in a lab setting.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Passion for cannabis medicine quality, patient outcomes, and industry innovation.

Preferred

  • Experience with solventless extraction equipment (rosin presses, ice water hash systems, sifting screens). Mechanical or plasmastatic separation a bonus.
  • Familiarity with Utah’s medical cannabis regulatory environment.

Work Environment & Culture

Dragonfly Wellness fosters a collaborative, patient-focused environment where every team member’s contribution directly impacts the health and happiness of the community. As part of our team, you will work alongside passionate professionals committed to changing the narrative around medical cannabis through education, quality products, and compassionate care. We will become a Schedule III DEA registered medical cannabis facility so the highest standards in regulation will be enforced through all of our processes. This can be a very different and challenging work environment for candidates that only have adult use or legacy market experience.
