Externship Manager information

What does an externship manager do?

An Externship Manager oversees and coordinates externship programs, which provide students or trainees with practical, hands-on experience in their field of study. They work with employers, educational institutions, and participants to arrange placements, monitor progress, and ensure that learning objectives are met. Their responsibilities often include recruiting host organizations, developing program guidelines, matching students with suitable externships, and evaluating program effectiveness. Externship Managers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an externship manager?

To thrive as an Externship Manager, you need a strong background in education administration, program management, and relationship-building, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in education, business, or a related field. Familiarity with student information systems, internship management platforms, and compliance regulations is often required. Exceptional organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills help you effectively coordinate between students, employers, and academic staff. These abilities are crucial to ensuring successful externship experiences that meet educational standards and foster valuable professional connections.

How does an externship manager typically collaborate with academic institutions and external partners?

An Externship Manager regularly coordinates with academic faculty, career services, and a variety of external organizations to secure and maintain meaningful externship placements for students. This involves establishing and nurturing relationships with employers, understanding their needs, and aligning them with student learning objectives. The role also requires ongoing communication to address challenges, gather feedback, and ensure compliance with institutional and industry standards. Effective collaboration is key to creating high-quality, mutually beneficial experiences for both students and partner organizations.

Can you get hired from an externship?

An externship can lead to a job offer if the extern demonstrates strong skills, professionalism, and fits the company's needs. Many organizations use externships as a pathway to full-time employment, especially when they evaluate candidates' performance during the program. However, hiring from an externship is not guaranteed and depends on the company's hiring needs and the extern's performance.

Do paid externships exist?

Yes, paid externships do exist and are offered in various industries, including healthcare, law, and business. These programs provide participants with practical experience while earning compensation, often requiring a certain level of skill or certification. Paid externships can enhance a resume and provide valuable industry connections.

Veterinary Extern - General Practice

National Veterinary Associates

Scottsdale, AZ

Full-time

Re-posted 9 days ago

Job description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences at McDowell Mountain Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view list of stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
