Job Description

The Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is responsible for providing direct patient care to adult and geriatric patients in the home setting.

  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to implement a comprehensive plan of care with the physician
  • Provides therapeutic care to help restore function and daily activities of living under the direction of the occupational therapist (OTR) in accordance with the physician's plan of care
  • Participates in the education and delivery of the exercise program developed by the OTR for strengthening and controlling of the upper extremities
  • Instructs patients and caregivers regarding plan of treatment, basic living skills and proper use of adaptive equipment
  • Observes and documents patients' progress and health status in a timely manner via electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Provides teaching techniques, such as, the proper method of moving from a bed into a wheelchair, and the best ways to stretch and limber muscles to improve patients' quality of life
  • Participates in weekly case conference ensure effective coordination of care as well as monthly therapy in-services
  • Assesses patient environment and initiates actions to prevent accidents and promote safety in the home setting
