What is an extended school year?

An Extended School Year (ESY) job involves working with students who require special education services beyond the regular school year to prevent regression in critical skills. ESY staff, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and therapists, provide instruction and support based on individual student needs, often following an IEP (Individualized Education Program). These positions are typically temporary, lasting for a few weeks during the summer. Responsibilities may include assisting with academics, life skills, and behavioral support in a structured setting.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for an extended school year teacher?

As an Extended School Year teacher, your primary responsibilities include implementing individualized lesson plans, monitoring student progress toward IEP goals, and adapting curriculum to meet a variety of learning needs. You’ll also work closely with support staff, such as paraprofessionals and therapists, to provide comprehensive services for students requiring additional support beyond the traditional school year. Establishing a structured, positive classroom environment and maintaining ongoing communication with parents and school administrators are essential aspects of the job. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on student learning and retention during summer or other school breaks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the extended school year position?

To excel in an Extended School Year (ESY) position, you should have experience in special education, strong instructional skills, and usually hold an appropriate teaching certification or relevant credentials. Familiarity with individualized education program (IEP) software, adaptive educational tools, and classroom management systems is valuable. Patience, flexibility, and strong interpersonal communication help you effectively support students with diverse learning needs and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are vital to provide consistent, high-quality instruction and ensure students make continued progress during extended school periods.
