What is the difference between Expo vs Event Coordinator?

AspectExpo
Primary RoleOrganizing and managing trade shows, exhibitions, and large-scale events focused on showcasing products or services
Work EnvironmentEvent venues, convention centers, trade show floors
Required SkillsEvent planning, logistics, vendor coordination, marketing
Common CertificationsEvent Planning Certification, CMP (Certified Meeting Professional)

While both roles involve event management, an Expo focuses specifically on large-scale trade shows and exhibitions, often requiring specialized logistics and industry knowledge. To thrive as an Expo (Expediter) in a restaurant, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of food safety and kitchen procedures, typically gained through experience in food service. Familiarity with kitchen display systems (KDS), point-of-sale (POS) software, and order tracking tools is often required. Excellent communication, multitasking abilities, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for managing orders between the kitchen and front-of-house staff. These skills ensure efficient service, accurate order delivery, and a smooth workflow during busy shifts.

What is an expo?

Expo workers are individuals who assist with the setup, operation, and breakdown of expositions, trade shows, conventions, or large-scale events. Their responsibilities can include managing registration, directing attendees, assisting exhibitors, setting up booths, handling logistics, and providing customer service. Expo workers play a key role in ensuring that events run smoothly and that participants have a positive experience. They may work for event management companies, venues, or directly for the organizers of the expo. This role often requires strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

What are some common challenges faced by expo event coordinators, and how can they effectively manage them?

Expo event coordinators often face challenges such as tight deadlines, last-minute changes, and coordinating multiple vendors and stakeholders simultaneously. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and the ability to adapt quickly are essential for managing these challenges. Utilizing project management tools and maintaining a clear checklist can help keep track of tasks and deadlines. Building strong relationships with vendors and team members also ensures smoother collaboration during high-pressure moments.

Host / Expo

Screaming Tuna

Milwaukee, WI

$15 - $20/hr

Part-time

Re-posted 3 days ago

Job description

Screaming Tuna is a modern Sushi & Asian Bistro with a passion for bold flavors, sustainability, and unforgettable dining experiences. Our flagship location sits right on the Milwaukee Riverwalk, with a second home in the heart of the Mequon Public Market. We’re proudly Wisconsin’s only Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch partner, serving sushi and Asian-fusion dishes that are as responsibly sourced as they are delicious.

As a Host / Expo, you’re part greeter, part traffic controller, part backstage coordinator—and a major part of what keeps the show running smoothly. Whether you’re welcoming guests or ensuring dishes hit the table with perfection, you set the tone for service and help create a truly memorable experience.

About the Role:

This is a hybrid role where you’ll work both front-of-house (as Host) and back-of-house (as Expo) depending on the shift and restaurant needs. It’s perfect for someone who’s organized, detail-oriented, people-savvy, and wants to learn both sides of restaurant operations.

Key Responsibilities:As Host:
  • Warmly greet and seat guests with a friendly and professional attitude

  • Manage reservations and waitlists using digital tools (OpenTable or similar)

  • Keep the dining room flow smooth by coordinating table turns with servers and managers

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the host stand and entrance area

  • Be the first and last impression for every guest—make it a great one!

As Expo (Expeditor):
  • Act as the final checkpoint between kitchen and table—checking for accuracy, presentation, and timing

  • Communicate clearly between BOH (kitchen) and FOH (servers) to ensure smooth service

  • Organize and prioritize tickets to help keep the kitchen running on time

  • Assist in packaging takeout and delivery orders as needed

  • Keep expo station clean, stocked, and running efficiently

What We’re Looking For:
  • Excellent communication and multitasking skills

  • Friendly, approachable, and confident under pressure

  • A sharp eye for detail—especially when checking plates before they hit the table

  • Previous experience in host or expo roles is a plus, but we’ll train the right person

  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays

  • Must be 16+ to host, and 18+ to work expo (due to proximity to kitchen and alcohol service)

Why Join Team Tuna?
  • Work in a fast-paced, upbeat, and respectful team environment

  • Learn front- and back-of-house skills that can grow into other roles

  • Competitive pay + tips for expo shifts

  • Staff meals, employee discounts, and flexible scheduling

  • Be part of a team that values sustainable sourcing, creativity, and hospitality

  • Opportunities for advancement at one of Milwaukee’s most celebrated sushi spots
