How much do explosives engineer jobs pay per hour?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an explosives engineer?
To excel as an Explosives Engineer, you typically need a degree in engineering (such as chemical or mechanical), strong mathematics and physics proficiency, and thorough knowledge of explosives materials and safety regulations. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, blast modeling tools, and relevant licensing or certification (such as from ATF or IME) is also crucial. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills help professionals work effectively in high-stakes, multidisciplinary environments. These competencies ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with stringent regulatory standards.
What are typical work environments and team structures for explosives engineers?
Explosives engineers often work on-site at mining operations, construction sites, demolition projects, or research facilities, and may split their time between fieldwork and office-based planning. Teams are usually multidisciplinary, involving engineers, safety specialists, project managers, and field technicians, requiring strong collaboration and communication. Daily tasks may include designing blast patterns, conducting safety inspections, preparing documentation, and overseeing blast operations. The role may occasionally require travel and working outdoors in varying conditions, making adaptability and safety awareness key components of success.
What does an explosives engineer do?
An Explosives Engineer is responsible for designing, handling, and safely executing controlled explosions for various industries, including mining, construction, and demolition. They analyze blast sites, select appropriate explosive materials, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Their work requires expertise in chemistry, physics, and engineering principles to minimize risks and maximize efficiency.

Our winning team is built by continuous investment in skills development, leadership, and well-being. As a global company, we offer many career paths to suit individual needs and aspirations.
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our Product and Production Support group. In this role, you will play a critical part in sustaining and improving our high-reliability process gas chromatography analyzers used in demanding industrial and hazardous environments. You will bridge product design, manufacturing, and field performance to ensure our instruments meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the development and optimization of manufacturing processes for gas chromatography systems and subassemblies.
- Design and implement assembly fixtures, test fixtures, and tooling to improve efficiency, repeatability, and quality.
- Perform failure analysis on production and field failures, identify root causes, and drive corrective actions.
- Document and submit change requests (CRs) to maintain and update standardized product drawings.
- Occasionally perform CAD modeling and drafting work to support fixture design and drawing updates.
- Collaborate closely with Production, Quality, R&D, and Field Service teams.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong experience in the design of small electronic assemblies and mechanical packaging.
- Demonstrated knowledge of analytical measurement sensors, detectors, and systems (gas chromatography or similar analytical instrumentation preferred).
- Working knowledge of Hazardous Area Certification requirements (ATEX, IECEx, NEC, etc.) and design practices for explosive atmospheres.
- Proven root cause analysis experience (e.g., 5-Why, Fishbone, FMEA).
- Exceptional attention to detail, especially with documentation and configuration control of standard products.
- Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks or similar).
Education & Experience:
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering + 10 years of relevant manufacturing / production support experience.
Alternative:
- Associate of Science degree in an engineering discipline + 15 years of progressive relevant experience, with clear demonstration of maintaining standard product documentation and configuration control.
Desired:
- Prior military service with technical/maintenance background (highly valued).
Additional Information:
As part of our selection process, qualified candidates will be asked to complete a short on-demand video questionnaire. You will be asked targeted questions regarding your attention to detail and root cause analysis experience.
This is a hands-on, high-impact role ideal for a pragmatic problem-solver who thrives in a collaborative manufacturing environment and takes pride in supporting reliable, mission-critical analytical instrumentation.
