Job description

Exhibits Manager

The opportunity 

The Jewish Museum of Maryland (JMM) seeks an Exhibits Manager to support the organization as it continues to build a robust exhibition schedule following capital updates and expansion of gallery spaces completed in 2025. The Exhibits Manager, reporting to the Deputy Director, will work cross-departmentally supporting JMM exhibition development and execution. In this role, with the support of the Executive Director, and the Deputy Director, your responsibilities will include:

Main responsibilities

  • Project manage development for gallery-based projects, including team development, schedules, meeting coordinating, budgets, articulating project goals and strategy briefs, and general administrative tasks.
  • Manage RFP and MOU processes for relevant contracts, to include curators, designers, multi-media professionals, contractors, consultants, and vendors. 
  • Support the installation and maintenance of JMM galleries, taking an active role in the gallery preparations between exhibits and maintenance throughout the run of staged shows.
  • Provide support for internal and external exhibit curators.
  • Guide in the development, production, and installation of exhibit graphic elements.
  • Lead the asset procurement process including image, film, and audio.
  • Assist in loan processes, working with both institutions and private individuals.
  • Manage project-specific budgets, tracks expenses, and provides budgetary reporting. 
  • Oversee the development and implementation of survey instruments and other evaluation modalities for exhibit-based projects.
  • Supervise Exhibits Coordinator.

 Qualifications and skills

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; alternatively, 3+ years of experience in a similar role
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) preferred
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of Jewish communal sector is a plus.
  • Experience in cultural heritage is a plus.
  • May require occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Requires extensive sitting, standing, and walking
  • Must be willing to complete background checks as required by current or future contracts
  • Occasional Sunday and evening hours are required for this position.

What we offer:

  • The annual salary for this position is $50,000 - $55,000.
  • Full-time staff at the Jewish Museum of Maryland work 30 hours per week, within standard operating hours. Schedules are determined between each staff member and their manager. Occasional evening or weekend shifts may be required to support museum operations and events.
  • We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, life insurance, Long Term Disability (LTD), Flexible Spending Plan, and a complimentary membership to the Jewish Community Center. 
  • We make work/life balance a priority offering three weeks' vacation and 6 days of sick time per year. 
  • JMM staff are unionized within Teamsters Local 355. This is a bargaining unit position.
  • We close the Museum for the following Jewish holidays when they fall within JMM business hours: Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, the first two days of Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, Shavuot, and the first and last two days of Passover.
  • We close the Museum for New Years Day, MLK Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and the day following Thanksgiving.
