Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Director Administration in the Department of Medicine within the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS).
The Senior Director Administration functions as the chief non-physician executive in the Department of Medicine, the largest and most complex department within Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and charged with the development of a corporate style of operations that supports the tripartite mission of the School. In conjunction with the Chair of Medicine, is responsible for the financial and operational integrity of the department through the stewardship of institutional resources, the recruitment of a professional senior management team and the implementation of appropriate budget control, business planning and program/practice development strategies. Has direct oversight for the administrative and financial operations of 11 divisions, 3 centers, and one institute. Reports directly to the Chair of Medicine, and may represent the Chair in various institutional forums including the New Jersey Medical School, University Hospital and the Rutgers's University at large.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Develops department financial policy including the annual budget process, investment strategies, internal financial reporting and audit controls.
  • Develops and leads an administrative and financial infrastructure for administrative support of the divisions, centers, and institutes within the Department of Medicine. Responsible for hiring and managing a senior management team responsible for administrative and financial operations including management of the Chair's office, clinical operations, clinical and basic research administration, program development, business planning, and facilities and IT support for each division, center, and institute within the department.
  • Recommends, implements and oversees faculty salary, production/performance and incentive systems under the direction of the chair and within institutional and state guidelines.
  • Oversees the development of standardized pre and post a ward grants management functions.
  • Develops an administrative infrastructure to support the central processes associated with the educational programs, such as the Medicine Residency Program, specialty fellowship programs, and fellow and resident recruitment, and other education related administrative support.
  • Oversees all of the non-clinical ambulatory patient operations and administrative responsibilities including the valuation of new practice opportunities and the reorganization of existing entities. Conducts business planning and negotiates agreements with outside agencies for ambulatory practice opportunities within the community and the State of New Jersey

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree in Business or Hospital Administration, health services or a related field.
  • Must have ten (10) years of progressively more responsible professional experience in personnel, operations, fiscal/finance, formulating policy and procedures in a healthcare environment.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in a senior leadership capacity required.
  • Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.

  • Outstanding human relations, communication and leadership skills, and the ability to function in a team environment are required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience in an academic healthcare setting and/or academic based group practice is preferred.
