Executive Manager, Office of the CEO

Van Andel Institute

Van, TX

Full-time

Posted 26 days ago

Job description

Van Andel Institute (VAI), a world-class biomedical research institute, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is dedicated to improving human health. We are pioneers in the fight against cancer, Parkinson's, and other diseases. We are committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and educators.

Executive Manager, Office of the CEO

The Opportunity

This is not a traditional executive support role. It's an opportunity to become the trusted partner to the Chief Executive Officer of one of the world's leading independent biomedical research and science education organizations.

As Executive Manager, Office of the CEO, you'll clear the way for the CEO to lead at full capacity in advancing Van Andel Institute's mission to improve health and enhance lives. You'll anticipate needs before they arise, bring clarity to competing priorities, and ensure the CEO's time and attention remain focused on the initiatives that matter most.

You will partner with senior leaders, board members, donors, community leaders, and external collaborators. Success in this role requires exceptional judgment, discretion, emotional intelligence, and the ability to build trusted relationships while managing sensitive information with absolute confidentiality.

If you're energized by solving complex problems, thrive in fast-paced environments, and take pride in making the extraordinary look effortless, this is a rare opportunity to work with significant independence and meaningful impact every day.

What Makes You Successful

You are someone who earns trust through sound judgment, professionalism, and unwavering discretion. You anticipate challenges before others recognize them, remain composed under pressure, and confidently triage competing priorities.

You communicate exceptionally well, both verbally and in writing. You know how to represent an executive with professionalism and authenticity, build relationships across all levels of an organization, and create order in environments where priorities shift quickly. You expertly navigate relationships with a high degree of approachability, tact and diplomacy.

Most importantly, you're driven by purpose. You find satisfaction not in being the center of attention, but in enabling others to succeed through thoughtful planning, flawless execution, and a commitment to excellence.

About Van Andel Institute

Founded in 1995 by Jay and Betty Van Andel, Van Andel Institute is an independent nonprofit organization where scientists investigate the origins of cancer and neurodegenerative disease, future researchers earn their PhDs through VAI's Graduate School, and educators inspire scientific curiosity through innovative K-12 programs. More than 650 scientists, educators, and staff work together on a state-of-the-art campus in Grand Rapids' nationally recognized Medical Mile, alongside leading health systems, a medical school, and a growing life sciences community.

Experience We're Looking For

  • 15+ years of executive-level administrative experience, including 5+ years directly supporting senior leadership.

  • A track record of managing confidential, multiple priorities across complex organizations or functions.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, paired with refined interpersonal presence.

  • Experience coordinating high-profile domestic and international travel.

  • Working understanding of nonprofit governance and board operations.

  • Expert proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Availability for extended and occasionally unpredictable hours as the CEO's schedule requires.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary will be based on qualifications and experience. VAI offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your health, well-being, and future.

Ready to Apply?

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to an organization advancing discoveries that improve human health while partnering closely with its Chief Executive Officer.

To be considered, please submit your resume and a cover letter highlighting your interest in the position and the experience that makes you an exceptional candidate.
