Description

The Application Engineer - Additive Manufacturing & Robotics provides technical expertise to support PADT's customers and internal teams in the development, testing, and implementation of 3D printing and automation solutions. This role is ideal for a recent Mechanical Engineering graduate with hands-on experience in 3D printing and robotics who enjoys prototyping, troubleshooting, and working directly with customers and colleagues to solve practical engineering problems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist customers and internal teams in defining and implementing 3D printing and robotics applications.
  • Support sales engineers with technical consultation on additive manufacturing solutions.
  • Design, build, and test 3D-printed parts and assemblies.
  • Operate and maintain 3D printing systems (e.g., FDM, PolyJet, or similar technologies).
  • Assist in building and integrating robotic or automated systems.
  • Create and modify CAD models for additive manufacturing using common CAD tools.
  • Apply Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles under guidance.
  • Participate in iterative design, prototyping, and testing processes.
  • Help diagnose and resolve issues with 3D printing equipment, materials, and printed parts.
  • Support debugging of robotic systems and mechanical assemblies.
  • Assist in preparing technical documentation, reports, and application notes.
  • Support training sessions and demonstrations for customers and internal teams.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies in additive manufacturing, robotics, and materials.
  • Actively develop technical expertise through hands-on work, self-study, and mentorship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (recent graduates encouraged to apply).
  • 1+ years of experience through internships, academic projects, or personal projects in relevant areas.
  • Strong foundation in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing technologies (academic lab, makerspace, or internships).
  • Exposure to coursework or projects involving robotics, automation, or mechatronic systems.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and attention to detail.
  • Hands-on, self-starter attitude with a passion for building and experimenting.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience with multiple 3D printing processes or materials.
  • Familiarity with industrial robotics platforms (e.g., KUKA, Fanuc, ABB) or basic PLC concepts.
  • Knowledge of basic electronics, sensors, and control systems.
  • Understanding of DfAM or MfAM principles.
  • Experience with additional prototyping tools (laser cutters, CNC, etc.).
  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. Therefore, for applicants who are not asylees, refugees, lawful permanent residents or U.S. Citizens (i.e., not a protected individual under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), otherwise known as a U.S. Person), final offers will be contingent on the ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
