The Fractional Controller serves as the organization's accounting resource, ensuring that financial records are complete, reliable, properly supported, and prepared in accordance with applicable accounting and tax requirements. This position provides the financial structure necessary to support CXI's continued growth, research and development initiatives, domestic and international activities, and long-term strategic objectives.

Core Responsibilities - Financial Accounting and Close Management
- Oversee the company's general ledger and ensure transactions are recorded accurately, consistently, and within the appropriate accounting period.
- Manage and strengthen monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing procedures.
- Review account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, liabilities, and other balance-sheet accounts.
- Identify accounting discrepancies, unsupported balances, unusual transactions, or control weaknesses and recommend corrective action.
- Maintain organized and complete supporting documentation for material financial transactions.
- Ensure accounting practices are consistently applied and aligned with generally accepted accounting principles, where applicable.
Financial Reporting and Executive Support
- Prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Provide the CFO and executive leadership with clear explanations of financial results, variances, cash position, liabilities, and emerging concerns.
- Translate financial information into concise, decision-ready summaries for executive leadership.
Tax Compliance and CPA Oversight
- Oversee the preparation and organization of financial information required for federal, state, local, payroll, sales-and-use, and other applicable tax filings.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors and accounting firms when specialized tax preparation or advisory support is required.
- Review tax-related schedules, filings, supporting workpapers, and information requests for accuracy and completeness.
- Monitor tax deadlines, estimated payment requirements, reporting obligations, and potential areas of exposure.
- Assist leadership in evaluating the accounting and tax implications of domestic and international business activities.
Internal Controls and Financial Governance
- Strengthen approval, payment, purchasing, reimbursement, contracting, and financial-record-retention processes.
- Help establish documented accounting policies, procedures, approval authorities, and financial workflows.
- Protect company assets through accurate recordkeeping, controlled access, and consistent financial oversight.
Cash, Banking, Receivables, and Payables
- Review accounts payable and accounts receivable aging and identify items requiring management attention.
- Support collection efforts, payment arrangements, account reconciliations, and documentation of outstanding customer balances.
- Review payment batches and supporting documentation before final executive authorization.
Audit, Due Diligence, and Transaction Support
- Maintain financial records in a condition suitable for external review, tax preparation, lender inquiries, due diligence, or audit.
- Coordinate financial-document requests from external accountants, attorneys, financial institutions, insurers, government agencies, and other authorized parties.
- Assist with financial due diligence involving vendors, customers, investments, acquisitions, international operations, or new business entities.
Research, Development, and Project Accounting
- Assist leadership in evaluating actual project spending against approved budgets.
- Help distinguish operating expenses, capital expenditures, research costs, prepaid expenses, and other accounting classifications.
International and Multi-Entity Support
- Assist the CFO and external advisors with accounting considerations related to affiliated entities, international contractors, foreign operations, and cross-border transactions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field.
- Strong knowledge with QuickBooks and Apple/macOS-based business environments.
- Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
- Prior experience serving as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Fractional Controller, or comparable senior accounting professional.
- Strong knowledge of financial statements, general-ledger accounting, account reconciliation, closing procedures, internal controls, and tax-support requirements.
- Demonstrated experience preparing financial records for federal and state tax filings.
- Experience working directly with business owners, CEOs, CFOs, attorneys, tax advisors, and other executive-level stakeholders.
- Ability to independently identify accounting risks, investigate discrepancies, and recommend practical solutions.
- Ability to work entirely on-site Monday through Wednesday.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Certified Public Accountant certification or license in good standing.
- Experience with multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, and international operations.
- Experience strengthening accounting processes within a growing or evolving organization.
