POSITION OVERVIEW

The Middle School Counselor serves on the Student Support Team and is responsible for promoting the social, emotional, and developmental well-being of Middle School students. Working collaboratively with students, families, faculty, administrators, and outside providers, the counselor provides direct counseling services, consultation, crisis response, and preventative programming designed to support student success and wellness.

The Middle School Counselor helps foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment by identifying student needs, developing intervention strategies, promoting healthy decision-making, and assisting students in navigating the academic, social, and emotional challenges associated with adolescence. This position works closely with the Director of Student Support, counseling colleagues, divisional leadership, and faculty to ensure coordinated and responsive support for students.

Supervisor: Head of Middle School 

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Position Status:  Salaried, Exempt, Full-time, 10-month, with pre- and post-academic year requirements

Work Hours: Typical hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend responsibilities may be required. 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements below outline the knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of a successful candidate.

• A master's degree in one of the counseling professions, post-degree supervised clinical experience, and passing of the National Counselor Examination or an equivalent exam are required
• Current counseling certification issued by the state of Georgia, or licensure in the state of Georgia, or agreement to transfer an out-of-state certification/ licensure upon hiring
• Strong facilitation skills to engage and educate parents, staff, and students
• Direct experience with adolescents (Middle School preferred) and expertise in their social-emotional, developmental, and cognitive needs
• Strong technology skills, including high competency in the Google G Suite
• Polished oral, written, telephone, and e-mail communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with a variety of constituencies
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently and take initiative to meet deadlines in a time-sensitive and fluid environment with attention to detail and accuracy; demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at once and prioritize
• Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
• Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, confidentiality, and judgment
• Team player with a positive attitude, proactive approach, and customer-service mindset
• Commitment to the mission of The Westminster Schools and willingness to serve as an ambassador for the School internally and externally.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in an independent school setting
• Experience with adolescent anxiety, depression, executive functioning, and social-emotional learning
• Experience with threat assessment, crisis response, and risk assessment protocols
• Familiarity with student information systems and educational support documentation

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Middle School Counselor assists the Director of Student Support and the Middle School Counseling Team in the following areas:

Student Counseling & Support

• Provides individual and small-group counseling services to students
• Supports student well-being through proactive intervention and skill development
• Manages crisis intervention and response efforts
• Assesses student needs and facilitates referrals to outside providers when appropriate

Wellness Programming & Prevention

• Designs and implements developmentally appropriate wellness programming
• Promotes healthy conversations surrounding mental health and emotional well-being
• Fosters a culture of student support, resilience, and self-advocacy

Consultation & Collaboration

• Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, nurses, and other support personnel regarding student needs
• Collaborates with divisional counselors, chaplains, deans, and student support personnel to ensure continuity of care
• Coaches and supports faculty and staff in implementing strategies that promote student well-being

Professional Leadership

• Monitors emerging trends, research, and best practices in adolescent counseling and student wellness
• Provides guidance regarding evidence-based interventions and support strategies
• Participates in school-wide student support initiatives and programs

Community Engagement

• Supports advisory, mentoring, leadership, affinity, and student engagement programs
• Participates in school events and activities to maintain visibility and connection with students
• Contributes to the broader life of the school through activities, programs, or other community involvement

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to become certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid is required.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and frequently walks on slippery or uneven surfaces.  The noise level in the work environment is often loud.

Westminster is a drug-free, smoke/vape-free campus.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the regular business day.  Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required and is associated mainly with planned events, conferences, and professional development opportunities.

Driving a Westminster vehicle may be required for this position.
