School Profile
St. Monica Catholic School is a PreK-12 Catholic classical school located on Mercer Island, just east of Seattle, Washington. Our curriculum model, based on the Educational Plan of St. Jerome, immerses students in the beauty of Western civilization and the Catholic intellectual tradition. We are a parish school and bring students into the sacramental and liturgical life of St. Monica Catholic Church. Our grades 9-12 program was founded as a pilot in 2020 and was accredited in the fall of 2023. The program limits student cohorts to 12-15 members and emphasizes intellectual friendship through Socratic and Harkness seminars.
Ideal Candidate
St. Monica Catholic School is seeking a student support and reading specialist for the start of the 2026-2027 school year. The ideal candidate will possess experience working with students with diverse learning needs, a worldview informed by Catholic anthropology, and a background in special education. St. Monica is interested in both experienced educators and those with a passion for young people and a willingness to pursue growth in the profession through regular coaching, professional development, and appropriate further study. The administration is committed to supporting both early career and veteran educators in their vocation.
Responsibilities
  • Through collaboration with teachers and parents, identify eligible students and help conduct assessments and analyze data to determine appropriate interventions and accommodations.
  • Provide direct services to students in preschool through 12th grade with identified learning disabilities, including but not limited to dyslexia, cognitive processing differences, ADHD, and executive functioning deficits.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, parents, and administrators to develop and implement accommodation plans that support the academic, social, and emotional growth of students.
  • Lead small literacy support groups for children in grades K-5.
  • Collaborate with outside service providers, including representatives of Mercer Island School District, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists to support students as needed.
  • Organize and lead regular meetings with parents and teachers of students utilizing support services.
  • Coordinate and direct assisting student support staff.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Successful applicants will embody St. Monica Catholic School's commitment to Christian intellectual, spiritual and moral formation in accord with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. They should meet or exceed the following requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in education or special education with related coursework
  • Possession of a Washington State teaching credential with special education endorsement or willingness and ability to pursue certification
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to form relationships with students, colleagues, parents, outside stakeholders, and the larger St. Monica community
  • Ability to manage record keeping for a variety of served students.
  • Complete Virtus safe environment training and a background check

Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as:
  • Functioning in classroom space - walking, sitting, standing, reaching
  • Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard/mouse and typing
  • Must be able to stand for up to two hours instructing a classroom of learners
  • Must be able to lift up to 25lbs on a frequent basis

Benefits Information:
  • Salary based upon education and experience. Compensation range from $55,000-$80,000
