Position Type - Full-time, permanent

Benefits - Yes

Salary Range - $76,000 - $85,000

Looking for an Executive Director who will be a multi-faceted, mission-driven leader responsible for day-to-day operations, archival work, financial management, and fundraising strategy intended to sustain and grow NYPAP’s impact.

Executive Director,

New York Preservation Archive Project (NYPAP)

Location: 174 East 80th Street, New York, NY 10075

Reports To: Chairperson of the Board

Residency: Reliable commuting distance to Manhattan.

Salary: $75-85,000 per year, depending on experience.

Paid Time Off: 14 paid days off and all 11 federal holidays.

Benefits: Reimbursement up to a maximum of $10,000 per year for health insurance and cell phone usage.

Flexibility: Hybrid position with a minimum of two days per week on-site. Evening and weekend events as needed.

About NYPAP

Our mission is to preserve the history of historic preservation itself. NYPAP documents and shares the story of historic preservation in New York City—advancing oral histories, stewarding archival collections, hosting programs that highlight preservation history, and inspiring an “archival mindset” across the preservation movement. Our organization is driven by an engaged, collegial board and operates with a minimum annual budget target of $300,000, with the December Bard Birthday Breakfast Benefit typically serving as the largest single source of unrestricted funding with a fundraising target of $75,000.

Position Summary

The Executive Director will be a multi-faceted, mission-driven leader responsible for day-to-day operations, archival work, financial management, and fundraising strategy intended to sustain and grow NYPAP’s impact. Reporting directly to the Chair and working closely with the Executive Committee and other internal and external stakeholders, the Executive Director will oversee a small team including a preservation fellow; an intern; and various contractors and consultants. The Executive Director will serve as NYPAP’s public face and a key driver of institutional partnerships, fundraising, programs, and other mission-critical activities.

NYPAP recently completed a strategic planning process, and the Director’s primary responsibility will be implementing an organizational Blueprint written by the Board containing next steps on the topics listed above. Other key responsibilities include managing the organization’s daily operations and focusing on donor development and grantwriting, with their focus on delivering a strong annual Bard Breakfast fundraiser.

This is a full-time position, with the Executive Director expected to work at least a 40-hour workweek devoted entirely to NYPAP. Although the Executive Director will occasionally be responsible for staffing or attending weekend or evening events, the general hours of service are weekdays from 9:30 AM to 6 PM, inclusive of reasonable meal and rest breaks.

Qualifications

At minimum, an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in the areas of Public Administration, Archival/Library Science, Business, Historic Preservation, Finance, Real Estate, Fundraising, or a related field is required. Additionally, at least two years of closely related job experience, a graduate degree, and grantwriting and archival expertise are preferred. A background or strong interest in public history, historic preservation, history, library science, or urban planning is a plus.

Performance Reviews & Growth Path

NYPAP is invested in the future growth of the Executive Director, and this position is subject to a performance review process set forth in the Blueprint. The Executive Director will be eligible for merit-based raises upon exemplary service as determined solely by the Board. This is an at-will position under New York State Law, and no contract of employment is expressed or implied.

How to Apply

Email a one-page cover letter, one-page resume, and a list of two professional references with telephone and email contact information as a single .PDF document to NYPAP’s Chair, Adrian Untermyer, at auntermyer [at] gmail [dot] com with the subject line “NYPAP Executive Director Application.” Only candidates eligible for further consideration will be contacted, but we very much appreciate your interest in the position and NYPAP’s important mission.
