What is an executive chairman?

An Executive Chairman is a senior leadership position within a company, responsible for overseeing the board of directors and often guiding the overall strategic direction of the organization. Unlike a non-executive chairman, the executive chairman is actively involved in the company's daily operations and decision-making processes. They often work closely with the CEO and other executives to ensure the company's goals are met and governance standards are upheld. This role can vary by company, but it typically combines elements of board leadership with executive management responsibilities.

How does the executive chairman typically interact with the company's board and executive leadership team?

The Executive Chairman plays a pivotal role in facilitating communication between the board of directors and the executive leadership team. They often set the board’s agenda, lead board meetings, and work closely with the CEO to ensure strategic alignment across the organization. While the CEO manages day-to-day operations, the Executive Chairman provides high-level guidance, mentorship, and oversight, helping to resolve conflicts and drive long-term vision. This role requires strong collaboration, diplomatic skills, and the ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive chairman, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Executive Chairman, you need extensive leadership experience, strategic vision, and a deep understanding of corporate governance, often backed by an advanced degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with financial reporting systems, board management software, and regulatory compliance frameworks is typical for the role. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help foster effective collaboration between the board, executive team, and stakeholders. These skills are crucial for guiding organizational direction, ensuring sound governance, and driving long-term success.

  • Lead member success strategy-onboarding, engagement benchmarks and renewal
  • Maintain deep familiarity with members, respective journeys, and priorities
  • Partner with the Commercial team on renewal strategy and ensure at-risk members are identified and supported early
  • Own enterprise benefit delivery and compliance across the member portfolio

Presence and Thought Leadership
  • Communicate complex ideas simply and persuasively, across formats and audiences
  • Operate as a strong internal and external communicator who can align teams, set direction clearly, and represent Health Evolution's value with confidence
  • Represent Health Evolution with members, prospective members, and key partners
  • Bring an informed point of view on the future of health care

The ideal candidate will have at least 20 years of relevant professional experience with at least 7 years of applicable experience in a senior executive role.
  • Product Management: Background in defining and owning an experience strategy and/or background owning a product P&L that aligns with company objectives and drives sustainable growth; experience owning a product portfolio making build/buy/retire decisions and translating member insights into product roadmaps.
  • Experience Design Expertise: Demonstrated experience convening senior leaders to include designing, curating, and delivering, engaging experiences at the CEO/C-suite level, weaving together the agenda, the room, and the pacing into a first-class experience; outstanding communication and storytelling skills to rally diverse audiences around a shared vision
