The Executive Liability Division is searching for an Associate Claims Attorney or a Claims Attorney depending on background and experience. The person hired for this position will work from the Schaumburg, IL or Chicago, IL office. Great American's culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. This is a hybrid role that combines 3 days in-office and 2 days remote work. Employees are expected to maintain a meaningful on-site presence to support collaboration, relationship building, and business success.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
As a member of our Claims Department, you will be responsible for handling an inventory of claim files. Duties may include:
  • Performs detailed analysis of each claim.
  • Evaluates coverage and liability, issues written coverage opinions and monitors all aspects of the file while working toward resolution of the claim; including hiring, monitoring and paying defense counsel.
  • Develops and implements claim litigation and resolution strategies.
  • Provides information to underwriters and reinsurers on specific claims or insureds and legal trends and issues which affect the business.
  • Secures and analyzes necessary information (i.e., reports, policies, appraisals, releases, statements, records, or other documents) in the investigation of claims.
  • Attends arbitrations or mediations as necessary.
  • May affect settlements / reserves within prescribed limits and submit recommendations where applicable.
  • Ensures that claims payments are issued in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensures that claims handling is conducted in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, and other legal requirements, and that all applicable company procedures and policies are followed.
  • May provide technical advice to other functional areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
  • JD (Juris Doctorate) and current attorney license required.
  • Generally, 2 to 6 years of related experience.
  • Experience in the areas of litigation, insurance coverage, employment practices, or claims adjusting would be a plus.
  • Detail oriented, organized and possess strong analytical skills.
