Job description

Director of Indirect Tax & Tax Transformation
Lead Tax Transformation for the World's Largest Furniture Manufacturer
Ashley Furniture Industries is seeking a Director of Indirect Tax & Tax Transformation to lead our U.S. indirect tax function while modernizing how we use data, technology, and AI to drive smarter tax operations.
This isn't just a compliance role-it's a leadership opportunity to build internal tax capabilities, implement cutting-edge tax technology, and transform how a global enterprise manages indirect tax in a complex, multi-channel environment.
About the Role
As Director of Indirect Tax & Tax Transformation, you'll lead Ashley's indirect tax function (sales & use tax, property tax, excise tax, licenses, registrations, audits, notices, certificates) while driving practical modernization through data governance, automation, analytics, and responsible AI adoption.
You'll be a hands-on leader who digs into source data, transaction flows, and system limitations to identify root causes and build sustainable improvements-not just fix symptoms. You'll partner across Finance, IT, Retail, E-Commerce, Operations, and Distribution to establish reliable data, strengthen controls, and implement scalable tax processes.
What You'll Do
Indirect Tax Leadership
  • Lead U.S. sales & use tax, property tax, excise tax, business licenses, registrations, audits, and notices
  • Oversee multistate compliance, taxability determinations, exemption certificates, and nexus considerations
  • Manage indirect tax audits, refund claims, voluntary disclosures, and controversy matters
  • Build audit-ready documentation, workpapers, and support files

Tax Transformation & Technology
  • Drive tax transformation strategy by identifying automation, data quality, and process improvement opportunities
  • Implement tax technology (tax engines, certificate tools, workflow tools, dashboards, AI solutions)
  • Establish data governance-define tax data requirements, ownership, validation, and reconciliation procedures
  • Use AI responsibly (draft documentation, summarize tax law changes, identify data anomalies, organize audit files)
  • Measure transformation impact (cycle-time reduction, improved data quality, stronger controls, audit readiness)

Business Advisory & M&A Support
  • Advise Finance, Legal, Operations, Retail, E-Commerce, and Real Estate on indirect tax implications
  • Support M&A transactions, restructurings, system implementations, and business model changes
  • Research taxability issues, nexus considerations, marketplace tax, and refund opportunities

Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, coach, and develop indirect tax team members
  • Build a culture of continuous improvement and process ownership
  • Manage external advisors and tax technology providers
  • Partner cross-functionally with IT, Finance, Accounting, Operations, and business leaders

What We're Looking For
Required:
  • Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, Tax, Business, or related field
  • 10+ years indirect tax experience (corporate, public accounting, or consulting)
  • Strong U.S. sales & use tax expertise-multistate compliance, taxability, certificates, nexus, audits
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects, advisors, teams, and technology implementations
  • Experience with process improvement, data quality, automation, or tax technology
  • Excellent communication skills-able to explain complex tax issues to non-tax stakeholders

Preferred:
  • CPA (or CMI - Sales Tax, CMI - Property Tax, MST, tax technology certification)
  • Experience in manufacturing, retail, distribution, e-commerce, or real estate environments
  • Hands-on experience with tax engines, certificate tools, ERP systems, dashboards, analytics, AI tools
  • Indirect tax audit, refund claims, system implementations, M&A experience
  • Big 4 or large corporate tax department background

Key Skills:
  • Data-driven mindset-comfortable with transaction flows, source systems, data extracts, reconciliations
  • Technology-savvy-Excel, ERP data, tax software, automation, AI (with appropriate controls and validation)
  • Continuous improvement mentality-simplifies processes, standardizes workpapers, reduces manual effort
  • Strong project management, change management, and cross-functional collaboration
