Job description

The Tax Accountant position is a position in the Colonial tax department. This position will supplement the current tax department personnel in facilitating the efficient, timely, and accurate filing of all monthly, quarterly, and annual sales tax, fuel excise, property tax, and additional compliance filings. This position would also supplement in facilitating the setup of master tax data within the various operating systems for Colonial Group Inc. and affiliated subsidiaries. This role also includes participation in projects associated with the maintenance of tax records and the preparation of assigned direct and indirect tax returns and related reports.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete accurate and timely sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions for multiple companies. Assist in research nexus issues for new and existing jurisdictional compliance.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual fuel excise tax filings for multiple companies in various states/jurisdictions.
  • Support the reconciliation of all tax general ledger accounts monthly to determine tax liabilities are accurately reported.
  • Support ensuring customer and vendor accounts are set up accurately for tax purposes within the various accounting systems.
  • Support maintaining and updating PDI system tax module.
  • Provide support to Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable departments by assisting with tax related questions and billing review.
  • Aid in ensuring customers’ tax documents are compliant with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Support in processing and maintaining city and county business licenses.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIESΒ 

  • Maintaining sales and excise tax returns records.
  • Verifying completion of monthly tax filings - filed and paid in accordance with state and local regulations.
  • Review and audit outgoing invoices for accurate tax set up.
  • Assist in responding to internal and external tax compliance research requests and assist as needed.
  • Assist with special projects, research, indirect tax filings, or additional compliance tasks, as needed, including:
    • state excise
    • sales tax
    • property tax audits
    • jurisdiction tax notice response and resolution
    • jurisdictional inquiries

REQUIREMENTS

  • BS/BA Degree in Accounting or related Tax business degree.
  • 1-3 years experience of directly with indirect tax and compliance and/or excise tax filing.
