What is an EVM?

EVM stands for Ethereum Virtual Machine, which is the core component of the Ethereum blockchain platform. It acts as a runtime environment for smart contracts, allowing developers to write decentralized applications that are executed on the Ethereum network. The EVM ensures security and consensus across all nodes, making sure that the same code produces the same result no matter where it runs. It supports programming languages like Solidity and Vyper, enabling a wide range of blockchain-based solutions. EVM compatibility is also a key feature for many other blockchains, allowing them to run Ethereum-based applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EVM engineer?

To thrive as an EVM Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics, computer engineering, and embedded systems, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree or diploma. Familiarity with microcontroller programming, circuit design tools, and security protocols is essential, and certifications in embedded systems or hardware security can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and integrity are key soft skills that ensure reliability and trust in the systems managed. These skills and qualities are crucial because EVM Engineers play a vital role in securing the integrity and functionality of electronic voting systems, which are foundational to fair and transparent elections.

What are some typical challenges an EVM specialist faces when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

One common challenge for EVM specialists is communicating technical vulnerabilities and remediation steps to non-technical stakeholders, such as business leaders or compliance teams. Balancing security priorities with business needs often requires negotiation and clear, concise reporting. Additionally, coordinating patch management and remediation efforts across diverse IT environments can be complex, as different departments may have varying priorities and system constraints. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication channels are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring effective enterprise-wide vulnerability management.

What is the difference between EVM vs Project Scheduler?

AspectEVM (Earned Value Management)Project Scheduler
Primary FocusCost and schedule performance measurementDeveloping and maintaining project schedules
Required SkillsCost analysis, performance tracking, project controlScheduling software, timeline management, resource allocation
Work EnvironmentProject management teams, construction, engineeringProject planning departments, construction, IT projects
CertificationsEVMS certification, PMP often preferredScheduling certifications like Primavera P6, MSP

While both roles are integral to project management, EVM focuses on measuring project performance against cost and schedule baselines, whereas Project Schedulers primarily develop and maintain project timelines. Understanding their differences helps organizations assign the right expertise for successful project delivery.

About this Role

EPC Planning & Scheduling Manager

Office: Colubmus, OH

Up to 30% domestic travel

QISG is seeking an experienced EPC Planning & Scheduling Manager to lead integrated planning and scheduling efforts across complex, multi-project EPC construction programs. This role will be responsible for developing project planning strategies, overseeing a team of Scheduler/Planners, and building a strong scheduling function to support successful project execution.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on planning leader who understands how engineering, procurement, construction, subcontractor activities, resources, and constraints impact project outcomes. This individual will work closely with clients, subcontractors, project leadership, and internal teams to establish realistic execution plans, manage critical path activities, identify schedule risks, and drive proactive solutions.

This role requires someone who can go beyond schedule updates — a leader who understands what drives the critical path, how logic relationships, lag/lead time, and float impact project completion, and how to influence teams to protect key milestones.

What You'll Do
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Scheduler/Planners supporting complex EPC projects
  • Build and grow the planning and scheduling team by establishing processes, standards, best practices, and career development opportunities
  • Provide leadership and oversight for integrated project planning, scheduling, forecasting, and reporting activities
  • Develop and maintain EPC master schedules that align engineering, procurement, construction, subcontractor activities, and client milestones
  • Partner directly with clients, subcontractors, project managers, and functional leaders to align execution plans and resolve schedule challenges
  • Own critical path analysis and communicate key schedule drivers, risks, constraints, and recovery strategies
  • Analyze schedule logic, relationships, lag/lead time, float, sequencing, and resource impacts to understand what is driving project completion dates
  • Challenge schedule assumptions and work with project teams to develop mitigation and recovery plans
  • Oversee CPM and LSM schedule development, including cost- and resource-loaded schedules
  • Lead schedule reviews, baseline development, progress updates, forecasting, and change management
  • Perform schedule risk analysis, critical path reviews, and time impact analysis (TIA)
  • Oversee Earned Value Management (EVM), KPIs, and integrated cost/schedule performance reporting
  • Establish scheduling standards and improve planning discipline across projects and teams
  • Support proposal, pursuit, and project startup planning efforts
What You'll Bring
  • 10+ years of EPC construction planning and scheduling experience
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and developing Scheduler/Planner teams
  • Proven ability to build and improve scheduling processes and team capabilities
  • Expert-level Primavera P6 experience
  • Strong understanding of CPM scheduling, critical path methodology, and schedule analytics
  • Ability to identify schedule drivers and explain the impact of logic ties, lag/lead time, float, constraints, and sequencing decisions
  • Experience partnering with clients, subcontractors, and cross-functional project teams
  • Strong understanding of EPC execution across engineering, procurement, and construction
  • Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM), cost/schedule integration, and performance reporting
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Utility, power generation, or large-scale industrial EPC experience preferred
What You'll Get QISG Benefits & Total Rewards Highlights
  • Competitive base compensation
  • Target annual performance-based bonus opportunity
  • Target Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) award opportunity for eligible roles
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with 100% preventive care
  • Company-funded HSA and pre-tax savings options
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company contributions
  • Employer-paid short- and long-term disability, Life & AD&D insurance
  • Paid Time Off (PTO), 10 paid holidays, and paid parental leave
  • Education reimbursement and professional development opportunities
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and voluntary benefit options
