Job description

Job Summary The Emergency Management Intern supports the City of Baytown's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in planning, coordination, and operational preparedness efforts. This position provides hands-on experience in emergency management through involvement in real-world projects, including planning document updates, resource tracking, data management, and training exercises. The intern will work collaboratively with City departments and external partners to support preparedness initiatives, enhance coordination, and ensure critical information is accurate and accessible for decision-making during emergencies and planned events.

This is an unpaid internship and the position is expected to start in August. LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES: Completion of FEMA Independent Study courses and other emergency management training programs Participation in training exercises and real-world planning activities Exposure to interagency coordination with City departments and regional partners Opportunities to attend coordination meetings, planning sessions, and outreach events Potential participation in Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activations during incidents or planned events (as appropriate and safe) Hands-on experience supporting emergency preparedness, response, and coordination efforts Duties Provide administrative and project support for emergency management efforts Assist with inventory management, including tracking resources, supplies, and equipment for emergency operations Support the review and update of emergency plans, annexes, and standard operating procedures Assist in the development, coordination, and evaluation of emergency management training and exercises Assist with Emergency Management GIS mapping tool development and data management Support hazardous materials data collection, organization, and mapping for planning and safety purposes Assisting the Emergency Management staff in a variety of roles and special projects Assist with documentation, reporting, and after-action reviews to identify areas for improvement Participate in interagency meetings to gain exposure to emergency management operations Support outreach activities and events involving public, private, and regional partners Perform all other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications Required: Completion of at least two (2) years of college coursework or 36 credit hours Currently pursuing a degree or certificate program in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public Administration, Political Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field Ability to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week during normal business hours Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to quickly learn new systems and tools; strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders; strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment; ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion; knowledge of basic emergency management principles and practices is preferred; ability to research, analyze, and organize data effectively with strong attention to detail and accuracy; ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team; strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills; and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and operational needs.
