The Youth Program Coach is responsible for delivering engaging, safe, and high-quality climbing instruction to participants in Momentum's recreational youth programs. Working under the direction of the Program Manager, Youth Program Coaches help create an environment where young climbers develop skills, confidence, and a lifelong passion for climbing.
This is a hands-on coaching position that emphasizes participant engagement, safety, and customer service. Coaches work closely with fellow instructors and program staff to ensure every class is fun, well-organized, and consistent with Momentum's instructional standards while building positive relationships with participants and their families.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Youth Instruction & Participant Development
  • Coach recreational youth climbing programs including Mo Mini, Base Camp, Youth Club, camps, clinics, and other youth programming as assigned.
  • Deliver safe, engaging, and age-appropriate climbing instruction for participants of varying ages and ability levels.
  • Assist with lesson delivery while adapting instruction to meet individual participant needs.
  • Encourage confidence, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive learning environment.
  • Monitor participant progress and provide encouragement and constructive feedback.
  • Maintain high standards of safety and enforce all climbing policies and procedures.

Participant & Family Experience
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for participants and families.
  • Build positive relationships with participants and parents through professional, friendly communication.
  • Provide parents with updates on participant progress and answer questions regarding programs when appropriate.
  • Put the immediate needs and safety of participants first at all times.
  • Represent Momentum professionally and contribute to a positive community culture.

Program Operations
  • Assist with equipment distribution, organization, and daily program setup and cleanup.
  • Help maintain organized program spaces and ensure equipment is clean and ready for use.
  • Assist with participant check-in, attendance, and other program logistics as needed.
  • Support substitute coverage, camps, special events, and additional youth programming when available.
  • Communicate scheduling needs, participant concerns, and operational issues with the Program Manager.
  • Monitor and respond to work-related communication through the company's designated communication platform in a timely manner.

Teamwork & Professional Development
  • Attend required staff meetings, training, and ongoing coach development.
  • Collaborate with fellow coaches to provide consistent instruction across all programs.
  • Demonstrate Momentum's values through professionalism, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Continue developing climbing knowledge, coaching skills, and instructional techniques.

HOURS AND AVAILABILITY
  • Part-time, hourly position.
  • Employees are expected to maintain a minimum of two coaching shifts per week.
  • Employees are responsible for finding qualified coverage for any scheduled shift they are unable to work. The scheduled shift remains the employee's responsibility until another employee has accepted the shift in accordance with company procedures.
  • Regular availability during weekday afternoon and evening program hours.
  • Weekend availability may be required for camps, events, competitions, or special programming.
  • Additional hours may be available during school breaks and seasonal camps.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Passion for climbing and enthusiasm for working with children.
  • Minimum of one year of climbing experience with strong movement fundamentals.
  • Experience working with children through coaching, teaching, mentoring, camps, childcare, or similar settings preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with both children and adults.
  • Ability to confidently instruct groups in an energetic environment.
  • Ability to maintain a safe learning environment and respond appropriately to changing participant needs.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use common workplace software.
  • Reliable, dependable, adaptable, and able to work effectively as part of a team.

ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Comfortable working in a loud, high-energy gym environment
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups and providing instruction.
  • Demonstrate climbing movement and techniques on the wall.
  • Comfortable working at height and moving safely throughout the climbing facility.
  • Ability to assist or support participants during climbing activities as needed.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move on uneven surfaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Ability to balance, kneel, pull, push, and grasp objects.
  • Visual acuity to assess harness fit, knots, belay technique, and participant safety.
