Description
The Critical Languages Tutor is an educated native or near-native speaker who leads one small class of elementary students in the respective language, following a structured curriculum throughout the semester. The instructor will engage students in the language during class, track attendance, evaluate daily assignments, create, administer, and grade quizzes, and assist in preparing students for a final exam conducted by an external examiner. Additionally, the instructor will serve as a liaison between the language students, the program director, and the program assistant.
Candidate must be a U.S. resident and legally authorized to work in the United States.
Assignments are dependent on sufficient student enrollment.
The tutor will teach one course and work 2 to 2.6 hours per week, either on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The position is in-person and not remote.
Job Duties
  • Lead small classes of elementary level students in the target language twice per week, following an established curriculum.
  • Engage students in speaking the target language, prepare formative assessments, evaluate both spoken and written performance and assist in preparing students for a final exam conducted by an external examiner.
  • Maintain detailed attendance records using the Canvas learning management system.
  • Record daily participation, homework, and quiz grades in Canvas.
  • Adhere to the syllabus and instructions provided by the Program Director.
  • Transition instruction from "In-person" to "Synchronous online" if required.
  • Handle confidential student information and assessment materials responsibly.
  • Refer students to the Program Director for academic advising.
  • Ensure course objectives are met and uphold program standards.
  • Assess the language proficiency of prospective students as needed.
  • Actively promote the Critical Languages Program and assist in recruiting students.

Qualifications
  • College diploma, degree, or equivalent qualification in any field (This includes: Associate degrees, Bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees, or equivalent post-secondary qualifications from your country).
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in the private or public sector.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience using Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Native or near-native fluency in the target language.
  • Proficient in understanding, reading, writing, and typing the formal standard register of the target language.
  • Proficient in English.
  • Strong ability to meet deadlines promptly.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and initiative.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Professionalism and efficiency in all aspects of the role.
  • Physical ability to sit or stand for up to four and a half hours, move between classrooms and language labs, and use stairs as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Certification related to second-language teaching.
  • Experience teaching and/or tutoring a second language.
  • Experience using voice recording software to develop teaching and testing materials.
  • Proficiency in using learning management systems (Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
  • Proficiency in creating teaching presentations using PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of academic culture and institutional structure.
