Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) is a leading not-for-profit civil legal services organization advocating for adults, children, and families that are experiencing poverty or have low income. We tackle the legal challenges and systemic barriers that threaten our clients’ economic stability, well-being, and safety. We address emerging and urgent needs with comprehensive, free civil legal services, direct representation, impact litigation, policy advocacy, financial counseling, medical-legal partnerships, and community education and partnerships. NYLAG’s staff of 380 impacted the lives of nearly 129,000 people last year.
Estate Planning Legal Internship
The Foreclosure Prevention Project provides legal representation and community education for homeowners facing foreclosure and other risks to homeownership. The project assists clients with all aspects of foreclosure defense litigation, deed transfers, and real estate contracts, closings, and short sale applications. The Estate Planning part of the Project focuses on combatting deed theft, and other scams, aimed at robbing New Yorkers of their ability to maintain generational wealth by helping New Yorkers with estate planning. Estate Planning Intern responsibilities include: virtual and in-person intakes; conducting legal research; giving presentations; drafting Know Your Rights and informational materials.
Duties and Responsibilities
Legal interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working with NYLAG on the Foreclosure Prevention Project. Interns will assist in all aspects of representation, including:
  • Conducting intakes to assess potential client eligibility
  • Executing basic wills, Transfer on Death Deeds, Heir at Law Deeds, property transfers and Powers of Attorney
  • Assisting with pro se probate and administration petitions
  • Analyzing homeowners’ circumstances in order to advise on courses of action
  • Conducting in-depth legal research on estate planning
  • Tabling at community events and delivering Know Your Rights presentations
Qualifications
  • Must be a current law student
  • Excellent research, writing and analytical skills
  • Strong commitment to public interest law
  • Superior communication (oral, written, and presentation) skills
  • Professional presence and demeanor
