Job Summary
Assist communications staff in transforming information into creative and visually engaging designs that support the city's communications initiatives and work.
Intern will be regularly scheduled to work an average of 20 hours per week for six months to one year. Hours are flexible.
The inclusion of a design portfolio in pdf form or a link to a website showing examples of your work is required.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide support for communications staff and city departments by designing a variety of communications and marketing collateral, including brochures, postcards, signs, newsletters and other items.
  • Assist with designing graphics for social media platforms, website, cable TV productions and in-house display monitors.
  • Ensure compliance with brand manual and other city guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program or taking post-secondary courses for graphic design, UX design and/or marketing.
  • Basic knowledge of fundamental design elements and principles including typography, layout, balance and design.
  • Competent in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Understanding of differing aspects of print, social media and web resolution/layout.
  • Ability to:
    • Work in a deadline-driven environment with minimal supervision.
    • Deal tactfully and effectively with staff, the public, and outside agencies.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience:
    • Working in an office environment
    • With design, art, and photography.
    • With writing and editing formal communications and/or content.
    • Using Microsoft Office 365, and content design for social media platforms and websites.
  • Interest in government and government communications.
