Job description

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Public Safety Master Sergeant (GA) is responsible for efficient and effective law enforcement, patrol, and emergency response for campus property. This 30-hour Staff GA position is reserved for graduate students of BJU.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Uniformed patrol of campus properties, either on foot or by vehicle, with attention to enforcement, observation, crime prevention and apprehension.
  • Emergency response to campus alarms and other calls for emergency assistance, including law enforcement, fire, and medical/injury type calls.
  • Enforces campus driving and parking regulations.
  • Performs traffic control as necessary.
  • Communicates effectively and interacts with others while handling various situations and problem solving.
  • Interviews complainants and suspects of campus incidents, investigates, and prepares written reports on those incidents.
  • May receive and handle all types of telephone calls and e-mails requiring immediate attention. May dispatch calls and relay information to appropriate units to ensure prompt response to calls and to best utilize departmental and university resources. Transmits vital information in emergency and non-emergency situations to appropriate Public Safety units, university departments, and/or outside agencies.
  • May operate and maintain various law enforcement emergency equipment, which may include weapons, rescue, medical, and/or other communications equipment.
  • Ensures that assigned unit, work area, and equipment are properly maintained, in safe working condition, meet department "readiness" standards, and are in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Able to work assigned shifts, which may include day, evening, night, weekend, or holiday shift hours.
  • Able to document in writing, all relevant information in the prescribed format in light of legal ramifications of such.
  • Able to prepare reports and make presentations.
  • Able to meet deadlines for assigned reports, projects, and duties.
  • Able to communicate effectively - orally and in writing.
  • Able to follow and/or give instructions and directions.
  • Able to read and interpret written, oral, and diagnostic form instructions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to use web-based computer applications.
  • Occasionally lift/carry and push/pull over 100 pounds.

Certificates & Licenses:
  • Able to obtain SLED I licensing.
  • Able to obtain CPR (professional rescuer level) and First Aid.
  • Valid US driver's license with good driving record.

Additional Requirements:
  • Able to meet deadlines for assigned reports, projects, and duties.
  • Able to communicate effectively - orally and in writing.
  • Able to follow and/or give instructions and directions.
  • Able to read and interpret written, oral, and diagnostic form instructions.

This 30-hour Staff GA position is available only to those pursuing post-graduate studies at Bob Jones University. Eligibility is based on the condition of having met the academic requirements for a student enrolled in a graduate program. To retain employment, you must be registered for and complete coursework for 6 to 10 credit hours each fall and spring semester.
